Jawa

Jawa is roughly divided in three major regions; west, central and east.

West
In the west you will find the a mix of Betawi and Sundanese traditions blended with traditions from all over Indonesia. In the western corner, the never sleeping city of Jakarta is located with the Sunda Kelapa harbour as the frontdoor to the watercarried flow of merchandise from all over the world. Many indonesians go to the metropolis Jakarta to find a job or education.

Central
The central region is full of beautiful scenery with Dieng, Borobodur and Prambanan temples as landmarks that should not be missed. Pekalongan, Yogyakarta and Solo are good places to shop for high quality batik. Woodcarving and silverwork are usually found at bargain prices.

East
The eastern region holds the bustling business and trade city of Surabaya. It is also located at a very busy harbour. The name Surabaya means the river of crocodiles but you wont see many of them these days.
The island of Madura is living up during the bullraces once a year otherwise it is a quite peaceful place. South of Surabaya in the Bromo area you will see the active vulcanomassive spewing sulphurus fumes towards the clearblue sky. In this area there are a lot of hindu temples scattered around and the Tenggerese population that still holds hindu ceremonies at the rim of the vulcanoes. Not far from here, the tomb of Indonesias first president can be found just outside Blitar.
When you past Banyuwangi and Ketapang in the very eastern part of Jawa you can take the ferry over to Bali.
