THE POWER OF PREVENTION
THROUGH THE ART OF STORYTELLING

This health and prevention-based program focuses on the strong cultural component of traditional storytelling. When communities embrace their traditional stories, they experience ancestral pride, cultural cohesiveness and improved self-esteem. These important elements are directly linked to the prevention of substance abuse and the enhancement of mental health.

How did our indigenous ancestors survive so well? Through an organized system of traditions that were balanced within the local community and surrounding ecosystems. Each indigenous group used stories, which served as a set of instructions, for preserving these balances and maintaining physical, spiritual, and emotional wellness.

Our stories traditionally served to enhance self-esteem and pride within American Indian communities.

  • Positive self-esteem is directly linked to the prevention of substance abuse and the enhancement of mental health.

  • Since the human brain organizes, retains, and accesses information through story form, traditional stories are a powerful tool for prevention.

  • When used as a dynamic model for positive behavior, traditional stories serve as lasting and effective guidelines for health, wellness, and prevention within the community group.

About our health and wellness specialist:
Ms. Autumn Morning Star is a well-known storyteller and performing artist, who wears a second hat as a traditional health and wellness specialist. She reflects the traditions of her Blackfeet and Choctaw heritage through her knowledge and insight into traditional herbal medicine. In addition, Morning Star is a certified Acudetox Specialist.

Morning Star began her study of herbal medicine as a child, while watching her father and grandmother treat various injuries and illnesses with herbal preparations. With the intention of becoming a pediatrician, Morning Star enrolled in a pre-med program. After four years of school and volunteer time at hospitals, she grew weary of the resistance to holistic medicine and changed her focus of study to American Indian Studies. She graduated with honors, May 2000, Summa Cum Laude, from the University of Memphis, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies with emphasis in Native American Studies.

In August of 2001, she completed a research practicum on her reservation in Montana with healer-herbalist, Wilbert Fish. She graduated in December 2002 with a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from the University of Memphis, with emphasis in Native American Studies and Native American Herbal Medicine. After graduation, she lived in Europe for six years, where she studied herbal and Homeopathic medicine. She now lives with her family in Colorado and travels to serve reservation communities across the country.
