Synopsis

BARTLEBY ... he was hired, but preferred not to work! He was fired, but preferred not to leave! In an office near a freeway, with an air conditioner that vibrates and a window without a view, comes a story about ... paperwork ... and the employee who wouldn't.

A self-satisfied owner of a small public records, the Boss, played by Oscar nominee David Paymer, has it all, a steady income and a collection of eccentric but dependable employees, played by Glenne Headly, Maury Chaykin, and Joe Piscopo.

One day the Boss hires a new employee and comes face to face with the greatest challenge of his life ... BARTLEBY, played by Crispin Glover. A man without a mission, a man without ambition. At first, Bartleby works industriously. Gradually he 'prefers' to do less and less. Eventually Bartleby prefers not to do anything and stands staring at the air conditioning vent. Upon bringing a 'young lady' to the office for an evening of passion, the Boss is shocked to learn that Bartleby is living there. He fires Bartleby, but Bartleby refuses to leave. Finally, the Boss moves his office in an attempt to rid himself of Bartleby. He can run, but he can't hide from Bartleby!
