Chapter 5

Philip had gone to the cabin, where he could be alone, he left a message on the answering machine saying he was fine but needed to work on an essay. He wanted to be left alone.

He battled all day on whether he should try to contact his father in Mexico, but the news he had to share couldn't really be blurted out in a phone call. He decided to wait till his dad returned. He left the cabin early evening and headed back to town.

There were 3 messages from Chloe on his phone. She was worried about him. Chloe, she was the only good thing in his life right now. He wanted to see her, to tell her what had happened and why he was so upset. He knew he could trust her.

Last night he had been too upset to talk, now he needed to. As he drove by Salem Place he saw a hot dog vendor and decided to stop and grab one. He hadn't eaten since yesterday.

He walked along the docks eating his hot dog and sipping the Coke he had bought. Looking out over the calm waters made him feel more tranquil.

As he turned the corner, he was startled to see Chloe and Brady sitting on the docks, they were smiling at each other.

He quickly turned back. Insecurity taking over. Chloe and Brady! Again!

There was some strange connection between the two of them. He sensed it and felt threatened by it. Chloe always got angry when he accused her of having feelings for Brady but somehow he'd always felt jealous of his cousin. There was something about Brady, something like a rebel without a cause or in Brady's case with a cause that brought out a jealousy in him. He was a tormented soul and somehow that drew Chloe. Perhaps because in some ways she was just as tormented. They had something in common. And then there was that whole opera thing.

The more he thought about it the more angry he became and the more betrayed he felt. She was probably telling him all about last night.

So intent in his paranoid thoughts was he, that he almost stormed right into Jan.

"Hey golden boy, where are you going in such a hurry?"

"Hey Jan, what's up." He said in monotone voice.

"Hmmmm why so down, did you and ghoul girl have a fight?

She smiled coyly at him, raising an eyebrow. She had seen Chloe and Brady on the docks together before. It had appeared that they were arguing but Philip didn't need to know that.

"Give it rest Jan."

Disgusted he turned from her.

Her hand came out and grabbed his arm.
"Philip, I'm sorry, don't go. I'm just being nasty because Jason and I had a huge fight." She smiled at him ruefully.

Philip nodded. "OK, sorry, I'm just a bit distracted tonight."

"Guess we're two of a kind tonight, do you want to grab a Java at Dot.com with me. We could console each other?"

Philip thought for a moment. What if Chloe walked in? He decided it would serve her right seeing him with Jan since she couldn't seem to stay out of Brady's company.

He smiled. "Sure let’s do that."

Jan smiled to herself. Wait till ghoul girl finds out.

They were drinking their coffees when Jan decided to spice up the conversation.

"So, is the reason you're distracted because of Chloe and Brady?" She asked putting on her most innocent expression.

Philip nearly spit out his coffee. "What!"

"Oh sorry, I thought you knew and that's why you were acting strange."

"Knew what?" Philip asked suspiciously.

"Well, its not for me to gossip but I saw Chloe and Brady on the docks together and well, well I really shouldn't say anymore. You'll think I'm just making it up because I can't stand ghoul girl."

A cold fear clenched Philip's stomach.
"Go on, finish what you were going to say."

"Well, it’s not for me to tell you but they looked pretty cozy and well, I saw them kiss."

Philip froze. They had kissed! How could Chloe betray him like that. It didn't surprise him that Brady would, loyalty was not part of his composition but Chloe?

"Philip, I'm sorry, maybe I misunderstood what I saw. You know that I don't like Ghoul Girl but I do like you, I don't mean to hurt you." She looked very sincere.

"No, it's ok, Jan. I saw them on the docks together, I just didn't realize that they had..." He couldn't quite get the words out.

Jan smiled sympathetically. Inside she was jumping for joy, this was even better than she had imagined. Philip had actually seen them together. It was curtains for Ghoul Girl. Philip looked so devastated that Jan actually felt sorry for him. He was way to good for Ghoul Girl.

She reached out and squeezed his arm. "I'm sorry Philip."

The look in his eyes, got to her. She hoped she hadn't sent him over the edge. She'd never seen anyone look so hopeless.

"Philip? Is there anything I can do? Do you want to go somewhere more quiet and talk?"

He swallowed heavily, blinking back the swell of emotions that were threatening to take over. His mother was a murderer, an adulteress, and was planning on having his father killed. His girlfriend was cheating on him with his cousin. Could things get any worse?

He looked up at Jan. Concern was in her eyes and something else. Why should he always be the good guy, maybe it was time for him for once to think only about himself?

"Yah, lets go somewhere."

He paid the bill and together they headed out. Jan slipped her hand around his arm as they walked. They ended up in front of a motel near Salem Place. It was a classy motel as far as motels go, built to lure the driving tourist with its proximity to the waterfront and to Salem Place.

He paused and glanced at Jan. Jan was no innocent, Jason's continuous bragging in the locker room was proof to that. A girl like Jan would use sex to control the guy in her life. He had no intention of being that guy but she was angry with Jason at that moment and he wanted to get the mental picture of Brady and Chloe kissing out of his head.

Jan looked up and sensing what he was thinking, smiled at him.

Philip got a room, while Jan waited outside. Together they entered the room.

They were barely in the door when Jan's arms went around him and her lips locked with his. Philip tried to force all thoughts of Chloe out of his head. These weren't Chloe's lips he was kissing, it wasn't Chloe's hair he was running his fingers through, it wasn't Chloe's body he was making love to.

Gasping for air, he pulled away. "Wait" He reached into his wallet to pull out a condom.

"No, no, it's OK" Jan breathlessly responded. "I'm on the pill."

"Yah but what about.." Philip didn't get a chance to finish as Jan ran her hands along his body.

Much later, as Philip lay sleeping, Jan sat up and watched him.

What a handsome sexy guy he was. She had been rather upset earlier in the evening when she found out that Jason has cheated on her, but now it didn't matter anymore. They were even. It hadn't really mattered that at the moment of heightened passion, Philip had called out Chloe's name. What mattered was that he had made love to her and that forever changed his relationship with Ghoul Girl. Once Ghoul Girl found out that he had made love to her most hated enemy she would never forgive him. She might even be so mortified she would leave Salem and never return.

A delighted sigh escaped her lips as she lay back on the pillows cherishing the moment when Ghoul Girl found out.
