Chapter 4

"Get out of here, you don't deserve my father. Go be with Roman. Whores don't belong here." Brady yelled at Marlena.

The hate emanating from him frightened her, his unrelenting anger had no foundation. She had tried once again to reach out to him and form a compromise. She reminded him of when he was little and when she read him bedtime stories. For a moment, he went back with her, remembering those good times, a sadness almost wistfulness entered his eyes, like almost for a moment, he would have given anything to go back there. She too remembered those times, when the cute little boy had clung to her and regarded her as his mother. What had happened to that little boy?

For a split second he looked into her eyes and there was vulnerability in those icy blue eyes of his, then it disappeared so quickly, Marlena convinced herself she had imagined it.

The look that then entered his eyes was a look she knew well, hatred and contempt. She knew she had treated him badly on a number of occasions since he had returned and seeing him paralyzed in the hospital had torn a chunk out of her soul. She knew she was responsible for that. But Brady was regaining full use of his legs, his anger should be waning not growing. It was obvious that he hated her so much and that hatred continually frightened her. What if he turned on Belle some day.

As the hateful words left his mouth, a look of horror entered his eyes. Marlena turned around to find that Belle had entered the condo. Her blue eyes wide with disbelief and shock over her brother's ugly words.

"Oh baby." Marlena went over to her.

Belle pulled back. "Mom, is this what Brady had been doing all along? Calling you names like that? Is that why you hit him in Paris? Is that why you were going to leave us?"

"Sweetie, I'm so sorry you heard that." Tears had entered Belle's eyes. "Why Marlena, are sorry she now knows the truth?" Brady couldn't help shouting out, despite the precarious situation.

"Shut up, shut up, shut up!" Belle exploded.

For a moment Brady thought she would hit him like Marlena had.

"I've defended you all these months, I believed your lies saying you wanted to make this work, how could you do that to me?" Belle managed to choke out, tears running down her face.

Brady's heart twisted, despite Marlena's presence, his eyes welled up with tears. "Belle, I'm sorry this can't work, your mother's in love with Roman and.."

"Shut up!" Belle screamed out almost hysterical. "I hate you for what you've done, this family is more important than anything to me and you're tearing it apart. I don't want to talk to you I don't even want to see you, why don't you just go, get out of here!!!"

"Belle honey, calm down, you're going to make yourself sick. Shhhh it's ok precious girl." Marlena put her arms around her daughter trying to console her. Belle broke down sobbing in Marlena's arms.

Brady felt sick, Belle was never supposed to hear any of the conversations he had with Marlena. Belle had looked at him with such hurt and disillusionment. 'Belle forgive me', he had wanted to say but he couldn't get the words past the lump in his throat. He limped out of the condo on his crutches as fast as he could.

When he got outside the door, the tears fell, slowly rolling down his face. Just then John got off the elevator. Looking at his son, he immediately came to him and hugged him, softly asking. "Hey kid, what's happened?"

"Dad." Brady sobbed. John's heart went out to him. Brady was obviously very distraught. He hadn't seen him like this since the hospital when he had woken up paralyzed. "Shhh Brady, whatever it is, we'll fix it." He gently assured him, patting his back. "Come on lets go in."

Brady pulled away, a strange, fearful look entered his eyes.  "No" he vehemently shook his head and limped over to the elevator wiping the tears away.
"Brady, did Marlena do something? Come on kid tell me why you're so upset."

Brady just glared at John and boarded the elevator. He knew this time his father would explode and there would be a price to pay. He couldn't let that happen. He refused to me humiliated in front of Marlena.

He headed down to the docks, by the time he got there, the pain in his legs was excruciating. Carl had warned him after the last time not to over do it. He limped over to one of the pylons and leant up against it. Closing his eyes, he flashed back to Belle's horrified expression. Why did that have to happen, he was so close to making Marlena leave.

Hearing a noise, he opened his eyes to see Opera Girl looking at the water, she had her back to him. "Just don't start singing, I've already had all I can take today." He remarked nastily.

She jumped slightly started to realize that she wasn't alone. She turned to glare at him, wiping away tears. "Shedding tears because you're finally realized your singing will never cut it?"

She didn't respond, just looked at him with disdain, as she blinked back more tears.

"All right what's wrong?" Brady asked with a raised eyebrow.

She finally found her voice. "Someone like you would never understand." Another snide remark was on the tip of his tongue but instead he softly replied "Try me."

"Why, so you can rub it in my face every chance you get? Does it give you some sort of sick pleasure tormenting other people. Ok you want to know why I'm upset! My boyfriend doesn't trust me enough to tell me why he's so upset, my mother won't tell me who my father is and to sum it all up I'm just a pathetic freak!!! Are you happy now!" She started running down the docks.

"Wait" Brady went after her as fast as his crutches allowed. A sharp pain tore through his back and he wiped out on the hard wood of the docks with a cry of pain, he ended up face down. Waves of pain washed over him, he tried to breath through it.

"Do you want my help or are you just going to be sarcastic and insulting?"

Through the numbing pain he managed to gasp "help".

Chloe reached down and grabbed him under the arms helping him up into a sitting position. She was startled to see he was white as a sheet, his eyes tightly closed, a sheen of sweat covering his face. He was breathing rapidly.

"Brady, I think I better call your dad or an ambulance or something."

Brady's eyes snapped open. "No!" he gasped "I'll be all right in a couple of minutes, I wipe out all the time."

"Yes but usually you're right back on your feet yelling out insults."

Despite the now slowly subsiding pain, Brady smiled at her.

It was amazing, Chloe observed, how handsome he was when that genuine smile came out. Usually she was subjected to the evil grin when he was determined to irritate and insult her. The one time she saw the real smile was at Dot.com when he came to surprise Belle by walking in on his crutches.

"Thanks for coming back to help me."

"Wow you must really be delirious from pain to thank me." She paused. "You shouldn't have come after me."

"Well you're Belle's friend and you were upset, I wanted to make sure you were all right."

"Funny since you're usually the one trying the hardest to make me upset."

"Yah well sometimes I can't restrain myself."

She smiled at him and sat down near him.

"So what's up with you and that cousin of mine?" Brady inquired.

"I don't know, he was very upset about something but he wouldn't tell me, he's not returning any of my calls, I think something really bad has happened."

"Oh don't worry about Phil he probably just lost a basketball game or something, he'll get over it."

A flash of anger sparked in Chloe's eyes. "Just because its not happening to you doesn't give you the right to trivialize other people's problems.

"Other people's problems are trivial compared to mine, how many people grew up without a mother, then spend years away from home only to come back  to the evil stepmother from hell, then get shot after being hunted down by her lover!"

Chloe's anger built. "It was an accident Brady! How about being given away at birth like some piece of unwanted trash, then passed from foster home to foster home, degraded and abused to a point where you can never trust anyone again, then having your mother suddenly show up and claim you and expect everything to be perfect but still hanging on to the little secret of who your father is!"

"Ok opera girl, cry me a river, years at boarding school wasn't exactly a picnic, there a lot of stuff that happens that isn't listed in the brochures, I had to endure years of....." Suddenly Brady stopped and froze."

Chloe's eyes were huge. "Go on, years of what? What happened to you?"

Brady glared at her "homework, exams, essays." He started to push himself to his feet.

His evasiveness spurned Chloe on. "Oh no you don't, something happened to you there, didn't it? Were you abused too, is that why you lash out all the time, is that why you hate Marlena so much, she was supposed to act like your mother and protect you. Is that it? She was too busy with her own life to see what was happening in yours?"

"Just shut up, opera girl, your singing up the wrong tree. I hate Marlena cause she's a bitch and a whore and I want her out of my life, my fathers and Belle's!"

Chloe stepped back from the hate radiating off Brady.

"What if they don't want her out of theirs?" She softly asked.

Brady threw her a disgusted look and quickly limped off.

She didn't follow him, knowing it would be pointless in his state of mind. It was obvious that Brady held on to some dark secret.

After a couple of hours, long after it had gotten dark, Brady decided it was safe to go home. He could barely stay up on his crutches and the pain from his fall was practically unbearable.

He entered the condo to find his father sitting on the sofa. "Come here son, we need to talk."

"I’m really tired, it’ll have to wait until morning."

In a quiet deadly tone, John responded. "This is an order not a request."

Brady stopped but didn’t move, an incredulous look on his face.

"Brady, you either come over here now, or I will get up and bring you over here."

A flash of panic tore through Brady. He had made a mistake, he hadn’t allowed enough time for the situation to cool. "Relax dad, if it’s that important I’ll come, I just wanted to lie down because I fell pretty hard before." He limped over.

"Are you all right?" John asked.

"I will be after a good night’s sleep." Brady smiled, ‘good’ he thought, ‘Dad’s concerned, maybe I can still salvage this situation’ He added on. "And hopefully once or maybe I should say if, I ever regain full use of my legs."

"That will come with time, right now we have a more serious issue to deal with."

Brady raised an eyebrow.

"Your treatment of Marlena! But first and foremost I want you to know I love you and your sister very much. But I also love Marlena, she is a part of my soul."

Brady opened his mouth to interject but John wouldn’t let him.

"Let me finish, nothing you say or do will change how I feel about Marlena. This family is going to work. I’ve been very slack with you because I know you are recovering."

"From a bullet that Marlena wished had killed me!" Brady interjected.

"Enough!" John’s voice grew loud and angry. "You are going to listen and you are going to do what I say! As of right now, you will never again raise your voice to, threaten or insult Marlena. You will show her respect at all times. If you don’t, you will answer to me. If you can’t live by these simple rules which will greatly benefit this family, then you are free to leave."

Brady, flushed and angry lashed out. "You’d rather have that whore in the house than your own son."

John sprang to his feet and grabbed Brady by the collar. "I have never hit my children, but Brady you are no longer a child. If any other man called my wife a whore, he’d feel my fist. If I ever hear you call my wife a name like that or any other derogatory name again, you will get the back of my hand!"

Brady paled considerably and shrank back. His voice shook. "You’re taking her side, after she almost had me killed? After she had me paralyzed!" His chin quivered and he swallowed heavily.

"Brady, it’s time to let go of the anger." Marlena added, as she walked into the room with Belle.

"You!" Brady managed to choke out. "You’ve manipulated this lynch mob, well you know what you can just all go to hell!"

"Brady" Belle screamed.

He managed to open the door and slam it shut behind him as he limped to the elevator.

Belle ran after him.

"Belle don’t" Marlena tried to stop her.

"Let her go." John recommended. "He’s feeling totally rejected right now, she’ll help calm him down."

Belle managed to squeeze through the elevator doors just as they were closing. Brady was in the corner looking like a trapped animal. Anger, hurt, betrayal, emanated from him. He refused to look at her let alone speak to her. Sometimes her brother reminded her of a wounded wolf, so absorbed in his pain, he would lash out and bite at anything, even the hand that fed him. She let him be quiet but there was no way she would leave him alone. She saw the exhaustion etched on his face.

He limped out of the door and almost fell, his exasperation grew. After another block, his legs gave out and he crumbled to the ground. After repeated attempts he couldn’t get up.

"Brady." Belle made a move to help him.

"Get out of here, Belle, I don’t need you, beat it!" He snarled at her.

She softly responded, "I can’t, I love you."

He looked at her then, her soft blue eyes shimmering with tears. He fought back his own, the hurt and betrayal were too fresh. "Just go."

"I’m not leaving you here big brother, despite your tough guy act. There’s a motel right around the corner and I brought money. So you either let me help you up and over there or we both spend the night on the pavement out here."

Every bone and muscle in his body screamed in agony. "All right lets go."

Focusing on staying detached, he let Belle help him up and over to the motel. He collapsed on the bed as soon as they entered the room.

"Do you want me to draw you a warm bath?"

He shook his head. She grabbed a pile of blankets and covered him with them. Despite the anger she felt over what he had been doing and the disillusionment she felt over who she thought her big brother was, she still felt very protective of him. She knew deep down inside, a good guy existed.

She had spend the last few hours reliving the good times and also flashing back to the part when he would have died right beside her on those train tracks. She didn’t condone his recent behavior but somehow instinctively she knew how important it was for him to feel like someone still loved and cared about him. Dad had been quite tough on him.

He lay there with his eyes closed. She gently reached down and brushed the blond bangs off his face and kissed his forehead. "Sleep well Brady, I’ll be right here with you."

She turned off the light and headed into the washroom.

In the darkness, Brady lay. Part of him wanted to just focus on revenge against Marlena for all she had taken from him, yet at the same time a single tear rolled down his face for the one person who truly loved him.
