Actor's Theatre of San Francisco

Nov. 17 thru Dec. 9 - Thursday thru Saturday 8 pm Sundays 7 pm

Actors Theatre of San Francisco continues its 12th season with the Northern California premiere of POPCORN by Ben Elton.  Winner of the 1998 Laurence Olivier Award for best comedy, Ben Elton's best selling novel-turned-play, POPCORN, will make its Northern California premiere at the Actors Theatre of San Francisco.

With a lightning-quick pace, POPCORN skewers film directors like Quentin Tarantino and Oliver Stone while posing a serious question:  In a society fascinated by murder, is there any such thing as a responsible person?  Bruce Delamitri, makes movies about killers.  Great movies, stylish movies.  His killers are style icons.  Getting shot by one of them would be a fashion statement.  Wayne and Scout are actual killers.  Real ones.  Low rent, low brow, morality-free zones.

One night, one Oscar-winning night, when Bruce has the world at his feet, Wayne and Scout hijack his life.  They have decided that it is time Bruce faced up to his responsibilities.  Fact confronts fiction in the heart of Beverley Hills and a terrible siege begins.

Catherine Castellanos, the associate artistic director of the Actors Theatre of SF, is in the director's seat for Ben Elton's POPCORN.  Her history with the theatre company involves numerous acting tasks, the last of which being Martha in the summer hit WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?  The plays in which she directed for the company have been Pterodactyls, Machinal, and subUrbia, the latter two having received several awards from both the Bay Area Theatre Critics and Dean Goodman's Dramalogue Award including the award of best overall production for both plays. The 10-member ensemble includes Paul D'Addario, Susi Damilano, Bill English, Rachel Klyce, Chris Paulina, Elizabeth Phillips, James Palermo, Sierra Robinson and Jennifer Welch, with design by Biz Duncan, Bill English and Brian Jones.
