I conducted an interview with Greg Carson from MGM. He is the dvd producer for the Conan The Destroyer Se for Region 2 and 4.
1) How did you get involved with dvds?
Started Producing Special Edition Laserdiscs and transfered to DVD work
when the format was launched in 1998.
2) What other dvds have done before?
I worked on so many here is a list of a few...UHF with Al Yankovic; Jeepers
Creepers, The Hound of the Baskervilles with Christopher Lee; Masque of the
Red Death with Roger Corman; Onion Field with the full cast and crew;
DeSade with Richard Matheson; and currently finishing CQ with Roman
Coppola.
3) How did you get involved with the Conan the destroyer?
International Marketing approached me for help on producing some special
features that could be exciting without the involvement of Arnold
Schwarzenegger as he wanted too much money.
4) what were some of the earlier ideas that you wanted on the dvd?
Full Cast Commentary ; Storyboard to Film Comparisons ; Original Script
excerpts...Etc...
5) I like how you did the menu and the music. It was very nice.
Menus were handled by a design team that works on many MGM titles.
6) how was working with the actors, director from Conan movie? for the
commentary?
Richard Fleischer -the Director invited me and my associate Jonathan Downs
to his house to record the commentary.
He was the kindest man I have met in all of my travels, we had lunch and
talked about his dealings with Disney on 20 thousand leagues under the sea;
and about Betty Boop (his father was Max Fleischer) and had a wonderful
talk about Conan The Destroyer (that you hear on the dvd.
Olivia D'abo and Tracey Walter were wonderful storytellers as well...Wish I
had the time and budget for more of the actors...
7) the comic book writers and the composer? how was it working with them?
Roy Thomas legend who worked on Conan for years in Comic form and Gerry
Conway who is still writing for TV;
And Basil Poledouris was so kind to
share composing secrets-If you are a musician - you can learn a lot from
the lessons he told us on the DVD.
8) Why no commentary or interview with Sarah?
No time or Budget.
9) why no uncut footage?
We do not have any assets as Universal Owns the Domestic Rights to the
film.
