PLEDGE
Edward Arthur Pledge was the son of Charles George Pledge & Elizabeth (Roberts)
Pledge. He was born in Reigate Surrey County England in 1877. On 12 February 1898
in St. Luke’s Church he married Ann Elizabeth Howard of Woking Surrey County, the
daughter of Frederick Howard (this was Frederick’s second marriage) and Elizabeth
(Turville) Howard. Edward Pledge was a gardener and his only sibling was a sister named
Emily who was born in 1879 and married in England in 1899. Edward and Ann
immigrated to Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada in 1919 after two of their daughters
came to Canada after the war as “war brides.” They sailed on a ship called “The
Minnedosa” and arrived in April 1919. They had the following children:
Emily who was a deaf mute and married 1.) a Watson 2.) Ken Hanson - also a deaf mute. Emily
had one son with Watson but he disappeared along with their son. Emily died in 1988. She was a
“war bride.”
Kathleen May who was also a “war bride” married one Clifford Cunningham. They lived in the
US for a brief time and later settled in Saint John New Brunswick Canada. Kathleen (Kit) died in
1993.
William born circa 1904 married Margaret Ougler (still living) and he died in 1993 - lived the
latter part of his life in Ontario.
Gertrude Alice born 1908 married 1) Harry Byers and 2) John Adair (John was married before).
Gertrude died in Oct. 1998.
Edward George Martin born 3 July 1912 married Gertrude Sweeney in 1940 - both still living.
Sydney Charles born 1915 married 1) Alberta Estey and 2) Jean Linton - all still living
Harold married Edith Parker - both still living.
Unamed Baby Girl stillborn 21 Jan. 1921 born in Canada
