The future of tigers doesn't look good. Already, 3 of the original 8 subspecies are extinct: the Javan in the early 70's, the Caspian sometime between the early 50's and the early 70's, and the Bali in 1937. Sources differ on how many tigers are left, but here's how many the Tiger Information Center says there are:

Wild
Total:about 5,000 - 7,500
Bengal:3,176 - 4,556
Indochinese:1,227 - 1,785
Sumatran:400 - 500
Siberian:360 - 406
South China:20 - 30

Captive
Total:about 1,500
Bengal:333
Indochinese:60
Sumatran:210
Siberian:490
South China:47

Most numbers are approximate.
