Vacation Time

Mom and Dad have a moving house, and that's what we go on vacation in. Rachel, Heidi and I sleep in a big, big crate together. I like that because I get to be with my buddie, Rachel, more. At home we have our own separate crates to sleep in even though we are right next to each other. Since I'm so much bigger than Rachel, she just snuggles right up to me to keep warm. Rachel loves to snuggle because she has very short hair and it doesn't take much to make her cold. Mom always puts a sweater on her and Heidi when we are out on vacation. We seem to always go where it's colder than at home. At home sometimes it gets so hot I have to stay inside the house all day. The house is so nice and cool, especially when I'm all sprawled out on the kitchen floor! My auntie Mary made us a huge bed to lie on, but I prefer the cold floor. My sisters, of course, prefer the warm bed.

Anyway, where was I? I'm almost as bad as Mom when it comes to remembering things. And I'm not even as OLD as she is!

We go on vacation a lot to this beautiful place with lots of tall, tall trees, rivers, mountains and lakes. It takes us two days to get there, I know, because we always stay overnight at the same place. Riding in this moving house is so much fun. We get to run around, climb on the couch, sit at Mom's feet or even sleep on the couch. We can't use the crate during the day because Mom puts the large birds in it, and then cleans it up at night for us to sleep in. I wish she wouldn't clean it so well though, so I can eat some of the stuff left on the newspapers. I mean the bird pellets, chicken, cheese, yogurt and things. What did you think I meant? Yuk!

See, here I go again straying off the subject. Maybe it's hereditary. We always stop a lot so my sisters and I can run and play and do you-know-what at rest stops. That's all part of the fun! We get to see a lot of people, and doggies too. Even when we are just inside, we get to spend a lot more time with Mom. When we're at home (the one that doesn't move), Mom is not home a lot, only at the end of the day. And then she is so busy I hate to bother her. I just follow her around to let her know I love her. She loves me too because she always stops to talk to me, or smile and pet me, or gives me a bite of what she's making for dinner.

In the moving house, Mom just sits around so she has plenty of time for us. But there are so many of us, so we still have to share her.

I think the place we go to a lot is Diamond Lake, Oregon. We stay at the Diamond Lake RV Park . Mom and Dad loves it there because it's so pretty. We love it too. There's a lake nearby with lots of open space where I can run free. Sometimes we stay at the lake all day and play in the water. Mom and Dad were in a raft one time and I tried to follow them out, but got so tired swimming, I had to go back to the beach. I was so nervous staying by myself I kept pacing back and forth. I guess Mom saw me and decided to come back right away. I'm pretty lucky I have such a nice Mom. I was afraid they would leave forever. Doggie hours are 7 times longer, ya know.

Sometimes we go bicycling around the lake. My sisters get to sit in a basket, but I get to run along-side. Mom always keeps me on a flexi leash though so I wouldn't go far and get lost. Other times we just sit at a picnic table and enjoy the view. Mom would take the birds out in a cage, and humans would come by to see. I like those times because I get to visit too! Mom always tell them how smart I am, and of course she would ask me to do something to show them. I do my best then because I don't want to let her down.

Mom and Dad always keep us with them when we're on vacation. They never leave us in the moving house by ourselves except to buy food, because we're not allowed inside. I wonder why. Maybe they're afraid we'd help ourselves to the food, ha. Good thing too, because I probably would.

I found a funny kind of ball on the ground one day. I wanted to sniff it to see if it was good to play with or to eat. Mom wouldn't let me and made us leave. I knew it was good to eat because I smelled something sweet inside. There were these little yellow bugs flying all around it, though, and Mom seemed to be afraid of them. Not me--I could swallow them if I wanted to. I guess Mom likes all little creatures and she didn't want me to hurt them. I really wouldn't have though because I didn't like the funny noise they made.

Here's a picture of Zeus in case you see him.

Mom, dad and some friends and I went to Carmel a couple of weekends ago, and boy, did we ever have fun. I got to swim in the river, run around in the sand, and we had lots of yummies to eat! Here are some pics of me and some friends on the beach. Breath-taking, isn't it (I mean the beach, of course).

These are pictures of me at Paradise, a campground on the McKenzie River in Oregon. This is truly a beautiful place. Ah, I just love it there and hate to leave. When we're lucky, we get this spot right on the river with our very own beach. There's enough space for me to run around quite a bit, play on the beach and even dip my toes in the river. The water is icy cold, but I don't mind cause I love being in the water. Sometimes during the day we see people going down the river in rafts and kayaks. We were there just a few weeks ago (July 2001) when we saw this guy fall out of the raft. There were several rafts so everyone quickly got into action and helped pull him out. Boy, he must have been cold! My human sister's husband made a wading pool by putting a lot of rocks together in a circle near the bank, and my cousin (mini poodle) and I played in it all day. That was fun! We didn't have to be afraid of being pulled down the river by the current. We also took lot of walks and explored and found really neat places. I love being in Paradise.
