Principal's Message

May 23, 1997

Dear Thompson Community,

What a wonderful year we've had! Delaine Eastin, the California State Superintendent of Education and Assemblyman Bill Leonard came to visit Thompson. Program Quality Review was a big success! We had a wonderful carnival. We opened a new computer lab with higher thinking math and writing skills. We had a very successful science fair. Our students are real PeaceBuilders, and we will be implementing Wave Two of the PeaceBuilders program next year.

We have completed class size reduction in the first grades, and we are almost finished with second grade reduction. When we start classes on July 1, we will also have third grades at the twenty-to-one ratio. Our students will have so many more resources available to them! Our sixth grade classes will soon be going on a fantastic field trip to an environmental science camp in Angeles Oaks. This is the first time ever at Thompson that students have been sent on an overnight field trip. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to spend some time learning about nature.

Thank you to all the parents for visiting our car wash, buying our Helen Grace chocolates, beef sticks, and frozen yogurt. Our fundraisers were so much of a success this year that we didn't need to do our annual Jog-A-Thon. It is so wonderful to have such great support from our parents and community! (By the way, frozen yogurt sales will continue throughout the summer due to the heat we are sure to endure. This yogurt is non-fat, and is a nice, healthy treat for the children to enjoy, especially those who remain in extended day.)

Don't forget to visit CaSA's Family and Community Reading Festival at the National Orange Show in the DAMUS Building. We have many celebrity authors, book signings, clowns, puppeteers, books, and even students from Thompson Elementary will be performing. I hope to see every student from Thompson there. Admission is free, and Omnitrans has given us bus passes so the whole family can go. This is a wonderful opportunity for children to become more excited about reading!

Sincerely, Barbara Pregmon Principal
