Between Physical Activity and Exercise

Both regular exercise and increased physical activity add years to your life and life to your years. Health benefits are obtained from increasing the amount of any physical activity you do. The more you do, the greater the benefits. Physical activity is any movement that uses energy. Exercise is physical activity that is structured and is done at a certain intensity for a certain length of time. We engage in physical activity for health benefits if we wish to avoid disease and delay death. We engage in physical activity for fitness benefits in order to improve some components of physical fitness (cardio respiratory endurance, muscle strength, muscle endurance, flexibility, and body composition).

Good Strength-training

Strength training is exercise that uses resistance--for example, weights--to strengthen and condition the musculoskeletal system, improving muscle tone and endurance. "Strength-training" is used as a general term synonymous with other common terms: "weightlifting" and "resistance training." Physiologically, the benefits of consistent strength training include an increase in muscle size and tone, increased muscle strength, and increases in tendon, bone, and ligament strength. Strength-training has also been shown to improve psychological health as well, by increasing self-esteem, confidence and self-worth.

These improvements have a great influence on our physical performance, metabolic efficiency, physical appearance and risk of injury.

Have to be Ready

If you're like three-quarters of Americans, you don't get the exercise you need. It's not that you don't want to. Finding the time, knowing exactly what to do and how to do it, and expensive gym fees are all reasons that people stay away from fitness. So what are you going to do about it? The answer is simple. Increase your activity level. Not just any activity will do, though, so it's important to take some time and figure out how you can make exercise a part of your normal routine. Once you start putting your new plan into action, it will gradually become habit. Write your goals down and keep an activity log to make sure your health-and-wellness program stays on track.
