The main reason I voted for Barack Obama in 2008 was the fact that he promised to make health care available to the millions of Americans who were uninsured. I have significant medical problems, and was precluded from getting health care due to pre-existing conditions. Under Health Care "Reform" I was able to get coverage. The main PRO of Obamacare was getting care to millions of suffering citizens. This was a good thing, but now let's look at the Cons.
Many of the people taking advantage of Obamacare are poor and middle class -- thus cost is an issue. Obamacare offers 3 levels of care: Bronze, Silver and Gold. The Bronze plans are relatively cheap, but offer garbage benefits and high out of pocket costs for the benefits to kick in. The Gold level plans have the best benefits, but you basically have to be well off in order to afford them. That leaves the poor and working class with the Silver plans. The Silver plans have decent benefits, but they can be expensive too! Then come the yearly increases! I'm going into my third year on Obamacare. After the first year there was an increase of over $100 per month to stay on the plan. I chose a different plan for my second year -- after that year there was another monthly increase of over $100. I'm going into my third year of Obamacare and I'm changing plans for the 3rd time!
When Obamacare was passed the President said that patients would be able to keep their doctors. This isn't exactly true! As I've explained, costs go up every year. Consequently many of the sick are forced to choose new plans -- and this leads to changing doctors. I'm lookiing for a different doctor right now for that very reason!
Yes Obamacare gives care to the sick, but how long will the sickly be able to afford it? Obamacare made millions of Americans slaves to the greedy insurance companies. If someone was really looking out for "The People," there would have price controls included in the law to prevent the financial rape of the poor and middle class by insurance companies. This wasn't done! Single-Payer was an option that wasn't passed. The way Obamacare is now, the poor and middle class are eventually going to be priced out of having health care. The only protections in the plan are for the health insurance companies -- people who don't sign up have to pay a $2000 fine. This gives the greedy corporations a captive customer base -- a base that they can raise costs on year after year.
I'm on a fixed income. I get a very small cost of living increase every year. This cost of living increase is eaten up every year by an increase in rent. Where is the extra money to afford yearly raises in health care costs supposed to come from? It would have been nice if the President and the Democratic Congressional majority at the time had written Obamacare to look out for the people first, but they didn't! Once again the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer. Isn't that the key to capitalism...

Doctors in South Africa have performed the world's first successful penis transplant. The patient was a 21 year-old man who'd had his penis removed after problems following circumcision. This procedure will also be used to help patients who have lost organs due to penile cancer.

| Body | It appears to be politics as usual in Washington. The Republican minority is busy spreading fear -- this time about healthcare reform; while the Democratic majority infights and spreads indecisiveness. Many uninsured voters like myself believed in the pledges of Democrats to fix the healthcare woes of this country. I certainly do realize that Washington politicians have all of the healthcare coverage they'll ever need. Consequently, when poor uninsured  people in Iowa, or Illinois, or Texas, or Ohio, or in any number of other states die, politicians don't bat an eye. It's just one more dead poor person who'll be replaced by the next crop of newly enfranchised 18 year-olds. However, the remainder of us living sick can and will revolt -- at the polls! People are dying daily in America, and politicians treat the issue like a political football to be used for media sound bites. This whole issue is very personal to me. Last week I lost a major piece of my healthcare when a program stopped being funded by the State of Illinois. So, actually politicians on the state level are playing politics as usual just as much as those in Washington. This is sick!!!  Since the majority in the House and the Senate are Democrats, the vast majority of the blame for the holdup in reform lies with them. All I can say is you're in power now Democratic Party, but it doesn't have to stay that way. Keep playing politics with my life and the lives of millions of other uninsured Americans and see what you get in return at the ballot box during upcoming elections. Heed my warning and act to save Americans, or don't and lose power...the choice is yours! | Body | Today America is the world's only superpower. This country can send people to the moon and beyond, create weapons to destroy the earth multiple times, lead the world in wealth and technology and so much more. America is this advanced and powerful, yet it can't --or won't-- take care of its own sick and poor. Uncle Sam was a symbol used in the past to instill patriotism in times of war and crisis. If Uncle Sam were to be drawn today to accurately represent the state of our citizenry, he would be a poor disabled man knocking on death's door. American politicians have money and health insurance so the woes of the average American citizen, who needs medical care and can't afford it, are low on their scale of priorities. The government can spend billions upon billions of dollars on the country of Iraq --and on politically motivated programs for illegal aliens-- and yet spend nothing in the way of universal healthcare for AMERICANS. There are over 40 million uninsured Americans! That is ridiculous! More than that, it is criminal! A country that can do so much for political reasons, does so little for the right reasons. Billions of dollars spent on an avoidable war in Iraq; money which could be going towards a universal healthcare program to keep all AMERICANS healthy and strong. To have the ability to feed and care for the poor and sick in our own country, and to choose not to do so is simply cruel and evil. Instead of spending time debating immigration bills for people who broke the law to get here in the first place, attention needs to be paid to the actual Americans. No politician at the state or federal level has any business asking for votes without giving universal healthcare in return. Uncle Sam is dying and he needs his meds now!!! |
