Topic: Racism
Whenever the oppressed in general, and Black people in particular, raise strong -- even militant -- objections to their treatment, there are always those who say "Tone it down." Many people -- both Black and White -- are uncomfortable when forced to confront the issues of race and racism:
Many Whites don't want to admit that racism presently exists and continues. Just today I saw a Facebook comment by a White man who said "We're being condemned for the crimes of our ancestors." Crimes of your ancestors? In the 21st Century we have a presidential candidate named Donald Trump who thrives on and promotes racial division; we've seen a dramatic rise in White supremacist groups and an outpouring of racial hate directed at President Barack Obama and his family since he became the first African-American to hold the office; African-Americans continue to die at the hands of racist police; Blacks still suffer from employment, housing, and educational discrimination; and then there are still the racist attitudes that exist behind closed doors between friends and family. Simply put, the crime of slavery may have ended -- but the crimes of racially driven abuse, mistreatment and discrimination never did!
There are also Blacks who are uncomfortable with addressing racists and racism. There always have been! Some are afraid of the consequences of protest and resistance; but there are others who are comfortable in a racist system. The same type of people who worked in the plantation house and warned the slave master of escapes and uprisings. The same type of people who worked against the Civil Rights and Black Liberation movements.
Understanding the situation, it's not surprising when the oppressed are asked to "Tone Down Their Rhetoric." The oppressed are often told to tone down their anger, blamed for their own condition, and even demonized for the protests of their mistreatment. There are those with a vested interest in keeping things just the way they are! People who don't want change will oppose it! The video below provides an excellent response:
