'Divinity of dance has weaned away'

Kozhikode, Dec 3: Dance as an art form has become so institutionalized that its divinity has weaned away to a great extent, bemoans Bharatanatyam exponent Maya Menon.

In a tete-a-tete with media persons here today, Maya said commercialization was a great threat and was gnawing into the very fabric of this art form.

A product of Kalakshetra, Maya opined that these days the youth take up dance with an eye on youth festivals and the fringe benefits that follow and the guru imparting training to earn money.

Maya, who teaches Bharatanatyam, regretted that such a trend will only spell doom for dance. She will be performing at the Tagore Hallhere tomorrow at a function organized by the Bankmen's Club• ENS
