August 1904

August 1, 1904  Sent out from farm today about 25 gal. strawberries.  Sold about 30 gal today to various people.  At (Epworth) League tonight Rev. Dr. Withrow gave lecture on " Egypt & the Land of Christ."  A large crowd of "Old Home Weekers",  arrived by train this evening.

August 2, 1904  Day off.  Went to farm & brought out 26 gal. of strawberries with Patty Bruce -  R.(Reuben)F. Horwood married.

August 3, 1904  Slept at farm all night and came in afternoon - went by train to Long Pond with E.[likely Edith Knight his future wife] Regatta today - Very Fine day.

August 4, 1904  Very fine day -  Labour Day - Very good turnout - At farm all day.

August 5, 1904  Still very warm everything parched for water.  No rain for several weeks past.  Very busy all day Kearing & Burt being away - Went to Church in the evening.  Very few present.

August 7, 1904  Sunday - All hands at farm today.  Walked out to Church in the evening.  Rev. S. Halfyard occupied the pulpit.

August 11, 1904  Thursday - Half Holiday  - Went by 2:30 train to farm where picnic was given by Mr. Hutchings.  Commenced picking Gooseberries at farm.  Picked about 60 gals. today.  Woods on fire near Mt. Pearl.

August 12, 1904  Wind N.E. Cold with light rain showers.  After teachers meeting,  meeting of picnic committee wqas held to decide about picnic - Sent 50 gals. goosberries to C. Steer today.

August 14, 1904  Sunday - Fine day very smokey in the morning from forest fires.

August 15, 1904  Wind Southerly & very smokey.  Big fire raging over South Side Hill.  Tonight the welcome rain has appeared & is raining pretty hard - wanted very badly. At League tonight topic was "Our Education System" which was discussed by Rev.  Dunn & Mr. Scott of Twillingate.

August 16, 1904  Fine day - everything fresh & clean after rain last night - Working at farm all day clearing rocks off celery - Sent 22 galls goosberries to town by Paddy Brine.

August 17, 1904  Dull all day - Gower St. Picnic held at Topsail.  Mr. Shears went to Ferryland in Inpaham (?) this morning.

August 18, 1904  Thursday - Last half holiday - Splendid day after heavy rain last night.  Geo. St. Picnic was held at Topsail by train today - Went to farm in the afternoon.

August 20, 1904  Snipe shooting commenced this morning - Commenced to rain at 4 o'clock & wet nearly all morning.  Went shooting back of Mrs. Grahams - only saw 3 Snipe & got two.

August 21, 1904  Sunday.  Fine in morning commenced to rain at night.  In s. School did Scty's (Secretaries) work as Miss Campbell is at Topsail.

August 22, 1904  Wind N.E. & cold.  Temperance meeting at League in the evening.

August 23, 1904  Very fine day - Went to Cape Spear shooting Curlew - Did not see any.  Shot two ducks in Learncup Pond on the way in but did not get them.

August 25, 1904  Last general holiday for season - Splendid day went to farm in the morning & spent day cutting runners off strawberry plants - May (his sister) off picking with crowd of girls - Min (Minnie another sister) to picnic at Head of Mundy's Pond.  Received a few days Afo Epworth Eras for July & August so that renewal will have to be made next June.

August 28, 1904  Sunday - Very fine day & warm - Father & all the family
