However, there is a 25-30% loss on productivity due to post harvest losses which may even be more in case of perishable horticultural produce i.e. Fruits, Vegetables and Flowers. Most of the fungicides and chemicals used for postharvest treatment of perishable food crops are either toxic or leave undesirable residue that causes severe health and enviornmental problems for our future generations.
These residues makes our horticultural produce unexportable due to severe restrictions from buyer countries. Therefore the search for a suitable eco-friendly and totally safe postharvest treatment for edible horticultural produce is going on throughout the world.
