        The Chinese Crested breed was first eligible for registration by the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) on April 24, 1992 at which time there were eight litters registered by the CKC for a total of 26 cresteds. Compared to some countries Canada has a very small Crested population. Due to the relatively small number of Chinese Cresteds in Canada many people do not know what a Crested is, and this is especially true of the puff variety. Because of this crested puppies can be hard to sell. This is both good and bad; good in the fact that it tends to keep Cresteds from becoming to popular with the Puppy Millers and the "I'm only out to make a quick buck breeders" who many times give up their "get rich quick" schemes after having one litter and finding that the puppies aren't quite as easy to sell as some of the other more known breeds, especially if they have an all puff litter. The bad aspect is the fact that so many people are missing out on sharing their lives with one of the most loving, devoted and entertaining breeds. Our National breed club, The Chinese Crested Club of Canada (CCCC), is trying to make the public more aware of the breed and the health concerns associated with them and trying to provide as much information as possible to everyone interested. The CCCC is hoping to hold their first National Specialty in the very near future.

        The growth of the breed in Canada is as follows:

        1992 - - 26 CC Registered
        1993 - - 54 CC Registered
        1994 - - 42 CC Registered
        1995 - - 84 CC Registered
        1996 - - 98 CC Registered
        1997 - - 79 CC Registered
        1998 - - 101 CC Registered
        1999 - - 120 CC Registered
        2001 - - 44 CC registered

        The Chinese Crested belongs to the CKC's Toy Group, (Group 5). We do not have extremely large numbers of Cresteds being exhibited here in Canada but we do have some very nice quality dogs in the ring.
        Since their recognition in 1992 until the end of 2000, the CKC has awarded:

        194 Conformation titles;

        12 Companion Dog titles;

        1 Companion Dog Excellent title;

        1 Utility Dog Title;

        1 Agility Novice title;

        1 Agility Intermediate title;

        3 Tracking Dog titles; and

        1 Tracking Dog Excellent Title.

        On March 12, 1993, Ch. Beltane Flutterbye, had the honor of becoming the first CKC Conformation Champion. The honor of being the first Best In Show title holder went to Ch. Razzmatazzmanian Stripper. Phaedrian's Joaquin Murieta was the first Crested to obtain a CKC Companion Dog title, CKC Companion Dog Excellent title as well as the first to get a Utility Dog Title. Four Halls Blueprints received the CKC's first Agility Novice and Agility Intermediate titles. Gingery's Phenomenon was the CKC's first Tracking Dog and Tracking Dog Excellent title holder.

        To obtain a CKC Championship title, a dog must be at least 6 months of age, either CKC registered or have a ERN number (CKC Event Registration Number) and has to accumulate 10 points, earned under at least 3 different judges. The winner at the breed level goes on to compete at the group level , and the 7 group winners go on to compete for the Best In Show award. In Canada we have a Best Puppy In Show award as well. Drop eared puffs are eligible to be shown under the CKC standard.

        Obedience differs a bit in Canada from the U.S. as well. Here we have the same titles but there are minor differences in the classes. An example is in the Novice and Open classes the dogs are on leash when they stand for examination.

        The CKC only awards two Tracking titles , the TD and TDX, not the VST (Variable Surface Tracking) title the AKC offers.

        Any one wanting more information on any CKC event can contact the CKC.
