Disease

Now before I start to tell you how to treat your fish, I just want to point out that I am by no means a trained vet, and therefore you should always check with an expert that you are treating for the right disease. The following are simple guidelines of the most common diseases, to point you in the right direction (see the links page as these will lead you to the professionals!)

White spot:
Fairly self-explanatory. Consists of little white spots on the fish's surface. Look out for early symptoms as it can be treated easily. Fish may scratch themselves against rocks and plants to relieve irritation.
Slime Disease:
Protozoan disease which causes slimy, bluish white skin.
Velvet Disease:
Fish may show sighs of irritation and will gasp for air due to excessive mucus production. Forms a rust coloured 'dusting' on the surface of the fish.
Fungus:
The fungus takes the form of cotton wool like growths, which are usually white or cream coloured.
Fin/mouth rot:
Fins appear eaten away, and mouth and head regions are eroded. Fin bases will usually be red and sore looking.
Bacteria Diseases:

These can take on many forms, such as no appetite, ulcers, loss of colour and generally sluggish behaviour. The most serious form of these diseases is dropsy. This makes the fish look bloated and the scales take on 'pine cone' appearance. This condition, known as dropsy, is highly infectious and any affected fish should be removed from the aquarium immediately.
