Strong Ram
(and ram's horn-shofar)
< Previous----Next>
Powerful and driven, the ram and its horn are associated with fearless strength
and bravery in the face of opposition. The ram's horn, or shofar in Hebrew,
was sounded at the outset of battle, and its call helped to bring down the
walls of Jericho. The ram reminds us of the Biblical story of the binding
of Isaac. To Jews and Christians alike, the actions of Abraham demonstrate
the ultimate sacrifice to God—the relinquishment of all desire for the
self. The shofar also reminds us of God’s mercy, as a ram was provided
for sacrifice instead of Isaac. The shofar was also sounded as the Torah was
delivered to Moses on Mount Sinai. The mountain was covered in smoke and the
people trembled in fear. The shofar calls one to repent and prepare for judgment,
and harmonizes the forces of justice and mercy. Made from glazed red earthenware
clay, the back of this limited edition piece displays the artist’s signature
stamp and the LQP chop mark. Left 2" high, right 1 1/2".
