The start of the walk: behind the museum on the right, under the shadow of the cranes of Swan Hunter shipyards, an unassuming little path, marked by a sign that will be our guide all day. The path will turn left then swing right, over the bridge heading for Heddon.

And the Aussies? Already striding out, out of sight....
