The Parthenon is a temple of the doric order of architecture, dedicated to Athene, the goddess of wisdom and the arts and crafts. She was the patron goddess of Athens. It is called the Parthenon because one of Athene's titles was "parthenos" (ie the maiden).

We spend a great deal of time here. We look at the building for its political and religious significance. We consider how it was built and why it was built. Then we concentrate on the sculptural decoration: the pediments; the metopes and the frieze, and not forgetting the huge cult figure of Athene inside.
