Publications and Poetry

While living in central Italy, Janet Butler worked with Romeo Giuli in the translation of his poetry from 1998 to 2003, and a chapbook of their work was published by Solveig Publishing, Sienna, Italy. In 2004 she decided to dedicate herself to her own creative writing. Ms. Butler has since then been published in more than 200 online and print journals and magazines, and has had six chapbooks published since 2005. For three years (2010, 2011, 2013) she placed in the Bay Area Poets Coalition's Maggi H. Meyer Memorial Contest.

"Upheaval" was one of three chapbooks selected by Red Ochre Press in their 2012 Poetry Chapbook contest. A pen and ink drawing was chosen as cover art for the Winter, 2013 issue of Poetalk. She has recently begun to study the Japanese tanka form, and one of her tanka has been selected as an Editor's Choice for "Cattails", January 2015. She will also have 5 tanka in an upcoming issue of "Atlas Poetica", and 10 tanka in a future edition of "Undertow". She is moderator of "Poetry and Prose at the Blue Danube", a monthly meetup for local literati in Alameda.
