the maze of forms
lived in a distant dream city
where streets slipped silently
over dream bridges
where thousand-eyed houses
touched the sky
where men of a thousand colors
lived together in peace.
It was called the New York
because it recreated the world until that day when,
from a black sky, a wounded bird
fell on the dream city
the non-city of this world
the star city of a thousand dreams
become star-dust, dust dreams
horror, sadness.
A distant wind blowing
star dust lifting, dancing,
casting new shadows
on old forms.

Poetry by Romeo Giuli, translated from the Italian by Janet Butler
