The
6th Annual Willem Wijnberg AKC CHF Cancer Fundraiser
The Items for this Very
Special Fundraiser were created and donated by Willem Wijnberg,
a very talented artist from The Netherlands.
For the past six years, Willem has made and donated all of the items
for our AKC CHF Cancer Fundraisers.
Thank you, Willem, for your monumental work to fight cancer in
our Berners.

The 6th
Annual Willem Wijnberg Cancer Fundraiser
On March 16,2008, I
authorized $41,600 to be transferred from our "Berner Lovers
Donor Advised Fund" to the Elaine Ostrander
(NHGRI/NIH)/Catherine Andre (CNRS) study of "Positional Cloning
of Two Genes for Malignant Histiocytosis" study, and the AKC
CHF matched our donation of $41,600, giving a total donation to
fight Malignant Histiocytosis of $83,200! Working together, the
Ostrander and Andre labs have each unambiguously identified two
regions of the genone (on chromosomes 8 and 20) with genes causing
Malignant Histiocytosis in Bernese Mountain Dogs. They are now
working together to find the exact genes and genetic variants
responsible for the disease. We ARE getting closer to being able to
produce information needed for genetic test development.
THANK YOU ALL for your
very generous support of our cancer fundraisers and THANK YOU to
Willem Wijnberg who donates his beautiful Berner paintings to help
us raise money to fight cancer.
Unfortunately, we have
completely depleted the funds in our Berner Lovers Donor Advised
Fund, and we now need to build it up so when the new round of
studies are approved early in 2009, we will have some money in our
fund. I know that Matthew Breen will need some funding next year and
I'm sure that there will be some other Berner studies which will
also need money.
I am pleased to launch
our "6th Annual Willem Wijnberb AKC CHF Cancer Fundraiser!"

Fundraiser
Challenges!
After all of the regular prizes are awarded to
the winners, I will place ALL of the tickets into a BIG container
for our BIG BERNER BONUS Drawing. The first ticket chosen will be
the winner of the gorgeous Dannyquest Berner and Pups Carting
Sculpture donated by Renee Jacquier. The second ticket chosen will
be the winner of the great Mad Dog Berner Art Berner Clock donated
by Andrea Madeley. .
DannyQuest Sculpture
Carting Scene with Pups
15x5.25x6.5" plus Cherrywood Base
Mad Dog Berner Art Berner
Clock
These fabulous Big
Berner Bonus Prizes have been generously donated by Renee Jacquier
and Andrea Madeley, we are hoping that they will encourage people to
send in generous donations and buy a lot more tickets for the
fundraiser so they can try to win these special prizes too! If you
have already sent me a check for tickets, then you already have
tickets for these special prizes. Of course, I'm sure that everyone
will want to get more tickets to try to win this prize, and all you
have to do is buy more tickets for the regular prizes painted by
Willem Wijnberg. You are getting tickets for both when you buy your
regular tickets. I have had several pledges from people since
yesterday, but we still need a lot more pledges and donations to get
to our goal. We need YOU to support this Cancer Fundraiser. Cancer
is a huge problem in our breed - if you haven't lost a Berner to
cancer you are lucky. But, your luck will run out before too long,
so why don't you "stack the deck" in your favor and make a
donation to support research in Cancer in Berners. The dog your
donation might save might be the Berner at your feet right now or
the Berner in your future.
We also have these
Challenges going on right now which will give you extra tickets!
I have a very special
Challenge from Carol Ganz for a three day period. Carol and Joe Ganz
lost their boy, Willie, to osteosarcoma on June 27th. Carol will
match any donations up to a total of $1000 for donations that are
sent between July 5 and July 8. Carol will also donate her tickets
to the donors,so their tickets will be doubled!!!
I have one more
challenge to announce - actually it's two challenges: An anonymous
Berner Lover has just come back from the World Dog Show in
Stockholm, Sweden and she has donated 10 World Dog Show pins as a
challenge. The first 10 people who send a check of $30 or more dated
July 8th or later will receive one of these "collector item
pins." The second challenge she is making is that the first
person who sends a check of $100 dated July 8th or later will
receive a very special World Dog Show program - it is a synopsis of
the show schedule each day with some nice short articles, photos,
and some advertisements.
The World Dog Show Pin
The World Dog Show
Programme
And a Personal Challenge
from Jean Cheesman
Item # 29 is Jean's Samson as a puppy, her Berner Boy sadly
lost to Lymphosarcoma in 1999. Anyone adding tickets in to this Item
on the Fundraiser from June 9th to June 11th she will match the
amount donated and if someone else wins it she will buy it from them
for Triple the amount they donated, this money to go to the
Fundraiser of course!!
Our fundraiser
will end on Friday, July 11th. As usual I will allow a few more days
for checks mailed on the last day to reach me. I plan to do the
drawing on Thursday evening, July 17th. That means that there isn't
much time to send in your donations.
** Procrastinators
** This is the right time to send in your checks and cheques!!!

Cancer Fundraiser. He does a tremendous amount of work creating the
prizes each year and we are indebted to him for his generosity and
hard work.
THANK YOU to Jean Cheesman, who created another wonderful

developing and updating the website and her dedication is greatly
appreciated.
THANK YOU to Took Visudtibhan for purchasing the china pieces

David, her husband, for driving 5 hours on Friday from their home to
help pack up the prizes and deliver the first batch of prizes to the
post office on Saturday morning.
THANK YOU to everyone who made a Challenge to encourage more
donations to the fundraiser: Toby Erlichman, Nancy Melone, Bobbie
Abern, Pat Long, Susan Muza, Dana Pero, Renee Jacquire, Andrea
Madeley, Carol Ganz, Took Visudtibhan and Jean Cheesman.
THANK YOU to my husband Bill, for taking a truck full of prizes
to the post office today!! All of the packages have been mailed to
the very lucky winners, except for twelve which I will take to the
post office on my way to work. I am missing three addresses - if
anyone has the snail mail addresses of these people, please send it
to me: David Hopper, Sue O'Bannon and Marsha Hargrave. Thanks!
Now, we will have a break from me asking you to send money to
help Berners, so that you can start saving up for our next
fundraiser, which will start around mid August.
