~ History: Toji Suzuhara is one of the few students still attending school in Tokyo 3. The rest have evacuated, but Toji's father works somewhere in Tokyo 3, so they stayed. Toji has a grudge against Evangelion pilots, due to the fact that she little sister was severely hurt during the battled between Shinji's EVA 01 and the First Angel (he visited her at least twice a week). When Shinji transfers into Toji's class, and admits that yes, he is the pilot of EVA 01, Toji feels the need to punch Shinji. So he did, twice. After that, he and Shinji are friends.
All the children in Shinji's class are possible Evangelion pilots, but they weren't born exactly nine months after the Second Impact that wiped out half of mankind, so they aren't perfect. Toji is one such child. Unfortunately, he was born closer to Asuka's, Rei's, and Shinji's birthday then the rest, so when EVA 03 was destroyed, and EVA 04 was completed, he was the first choice. Toji did not want to be a Evangelion pilot, unlike his best friend, but when he was told that his hurt baby sister would be taken to the best hospitals and given the highest possible treatment, he gave in. No one told Shinji that his friend had joined the ranks of the elite Evangelion pilots. Asuka tried several times, but she was cut off each time by something. During Toji's very first synchronization trial, the first time EVA 04 was activated, the Thirteenth Angel took over, and EVA 04 went berserk. Asuka, Rei and Shinji were dispatched to take care of the Thirteenth Angel, but no one told them it was a Evangelion, with a child inside. What followed was a emotionally damaging disaster, but had little to do with Toji. He was unconscious the entire time. His Evangelion was brutally destroyed, and Toji’s entry plug crushed, but he miraculously survived.
