Publishing your Webpages
If you would like others to have access to your webpages you will need to put them on a computer that is connected to the Internet. There are many places to store your webpages on the Internet. This computers are known as web hosts. Some of these are free others you may have to pay a small fee. Checkout the Web Hosting section on the Resources page of this site.
FTP
Before you can publish your webpages, you need FTP (File Transfer Protocol) software. I suggest WS-FTP or CuteFTP for Windows users. FTP software is needed in order to transfer your webpages and other files from your computer to the host computer. Basically the FTP program moves files from your computer to the host computer and visa versa.
The procedure to take is dependant on the type of FTP software used. Determine which software you will use and use the procedure it outlines.
The example below describes the WS-FTP procedure, although it will be very similar regardless of what FTP software you choose to use.
- Find a host computer (see Resources), register with the host computer. This will provide you with a username and password for the host computer.
- Get a log in on the hosting computer.
Open the FTP software. Type in the host computers address (the address of the computer that will store your files), your username and password on the host computer. When connected successfully:
The files in the right-side window in WS-FTP (remote host window) are the files that are on the web hosting computer. The left-side window in WS-FTP (local host window), shows files on your computer. On the local host window navigate to the directory on your computer where you've placed your HTML files. Once you have moved to the correct directory on your computer and the correct directory on the hosting computer, you can begin to copy your files.
