The BMP format: a little history

The BMP format, more accurately referred to as windows bitmap, is a rather old image format

that was originally developed and still mainly used in and for the windows operating systems.

BMP is a very large format, and is therefore not recommended for world wide web purposes.

It is, however, fully lossless, unlike JPEG, and supports a wide range of color depths,

ranging from 8 to 24 bit. It does not use any type of compression, and therefore causes file sizes

          to be very large.
