Sets size: Waist high

Sets Interval: 7 min

Surfers Out: 8 guys

And I thought last Friday was: The best La Jolla EVER gets - Stay Away - April 28, 2003 -

======================================================================

What I say:

Every so often, I go to the Westlake Compound, usually because my car needs repair, and the repair guy is next door.

Regardless of WHY I go there, the fact is, the Westlake Compound is probably the world epicenter of surfing / soul.

Channin is here, Diff used to shape here. Bahne - FinsUnlimited has been here forever. Jim "The Genius" Phillips shapes here. Eaton swings by. ETC --- ETC ---

Today, I bumped into one of my favorite guys: Sam "The Pinstripe Man" Cody!

I met Sam at least 40 years ago - He was a hot Point Loma surfer, I was a tepid La Jolla Shores Grem.

Sam's the last (opps - this shows our age) of a dying breed of resin artists - I doubt that there are too many following in his footsteps - too much effort / work to learn Sam's skills.

We commiserated on the state of surfing - more of that to follow - but what a class guy he his.

Rich "Toby" Pavel showed up, too. Toby's a young guy, but he's been involved in the surf biz for about 30 years - Ouch -

Good guy, too. More about him to follow, too.

Anyway - too much time spent this morning yapping and reminiscing...

- "Gee Uncle Billy, What a surprise that is" -

Coulda - shoulda gone surfing?

Naw, I'd much rather touch bases with old friends than flounder around in waist high waves!

Later,

BA

Opps Forgot Some Stuff:

Thought I'd better add some disclaimers:

* All of the tales I'm spinning are based upon facts of some sort.
* Most of the tales will be at least 50% factual.

I'm doing this web thing for a few reasons, and it is, and will be, "a work in progress" for a while:

1. It's an easy way for me to organize my "autobiography" so my kids will know a bit more about me.
2. I find this computer and internet stuff fascinating.
3. I was lucky to be able to start surfing - at least in my opinion - in the "Golden Age" of surfing - I do have some yarns to spin regarding those times.
4. This is an efficient way for some of the old guys to touch bases again - I've received a few e-mails from old (err, long-time) friends I've haven't seen in forty years or so - I think that's way cool.
5. I'm still surfing almost every day - and, at least in my opinion - that's a pretty "boss" thing to write about.
6. I think it will be nice, in a couple of years, to maybe look back at how good - or bad - the surf was in any given stretch of time.
