- The Shores Gremmies - A work in progress - Part Uno -

Bill Andrews, April 22, 2003

One of the fortunate "things" about growing-up, as a Shores Guy (SG) so many years ago, was that the lines of demarcation between "Our Gang" / "Our Tribe" of SGs, and everybody else was pretty clear.

There were three, very clear lines:

Line ONE - Territorial Lines at The Shores were geographically easily distinguished:

West - Pacific Ocean
East - Top of Calle Del Oro
South - Beach and Tennis Club
North - Scripps

Line TWO - None of us were old enough to drive - The difference between a 14 year old gremmie and a 16 year old must have been at least one light-year.

(My brother, Bobby "Little Pink" Andrews still remembers when I finally got my driver's license, and would NEVER take him or his buds to school)

Line THREE - Most of us had GLencourt 9 - phone numbers. (ours was GL9-1068)

I think that everybody who lived south and east of Prospect Street, had GLencourt 4 - phone numbers

Technically, I don't know if the Lusics were Shore Guys or not - They lived above the Slides, on Prospect. I guess Hugo was kindda a Shores guy, Peter wasn't - he could drive.

Tom "Little Nobs" or "The Grub" Barber, and John Sweeney were Shores Guys, Tom's older brothers, weren't - the older Barbers could drive.

Steve "Ma" Haney lived at The Shores, but he wasn't a Shores Guy - he could drive.

Our SG Tribe(s) stayed pretty intact thru La Jolla Junior and Senior High School:

Tribe One:

Me - B "Big Pink" A
Pat "Burro" Manley
John "MegaPhone" Mikelsen
Howard Scott
George Coles
Billy "Odd Og" Ogelsby
Bill Gilmore
John "Bull Neck" Light
Tom "The Grub" Barber
Nicky "Ding" Mirandon
Barry "Pook / The Bear" Mirandon
John Sweeney
Garth Murphy
Eric Murphy
Tribe Two:

Bobby "Little Pink" Andrews
Jon Close
Bill "Bent Safety Pin" Bender
Dickie "The Duck" Moon
Robert Moler

To Be Continued!!

Opps Forgot Some Stuff:

Thought I'd better add some disclaimers:

* All of the tales I'm spinning are based upon facts of some sort.
* Most of the tales will be at least 50% factual.

I'm doing this web thing for a few reasons, and it is, and will be, "a work in progress" for a while:

1. It's an easy way for me to organize my "autobiography" so my kids will know a bit more about me.
2. I find this computer and internet stuff fascinating.
3. I was lucky to be able to start surfing - at least in my opinion - in the "Golden Age" of surfing - I do have some yarns to spin regarding those times.
4. This is an efficient way for some of the old guys to touch bases again - I've received a few e-mails from old (err, long-time) friends I've haven't seen in forty years or so - I think that's way cool.
5. I'm still surfing almost every day - and, at least in my opinion - that's a pretty "boss" thing to write about.
6. I think it will be nice, in a couple of years, to maybe look back at how good - or bad - the surf was in any given stretch of time.
