     Llama Man

From the files of the San Diego Union - circa 15 June 2001:

There was a man found dead by a diver at La Jolla Cove the other day. The guy was handcuffed to a buoy fastening in about twenty feet of water. Authorities are not sure if it was a murder or a suicide. Even stranger, the man was well known to the local media around San Diego because of his peculiar traveling companion... a full grown llama.

My encounter with the Llama Man:

I was surfing one time at S. Bird (medium tide...upcoming) and the Llama Man had his animal on the rocks.

A llama may do okay in the Andes, but at sea level and on wet slippery rocks, with a little surf combined, they are kooks.

The llama almost drowned, the lifeguards had to come to his (the llama's) aid, and all in all, it was just another stupid performance from a guy who wanted attention.

The Llama Man wondered what was wrong with taking his llama for a little swim at South Bird.

Llama Man reminded me of: the way cool guys who go to the beach with a parrot on their shoulder.

(not a good thing to do at some La Jolla Beaches...a drunk dog-owner has shown, more than once, how efficiently his pit bull can kill a parrot, shouldered or not)

The Llama Man also walked his animal at the Shores, and because his pet was not a DOG, he felt he did not have to pick-up the llama shit off the sidewalk.

So many of my surfing friends have commited suicide over the past 40 years, that I think that I may have gotten a lttle overly casual over La Jollans' suicides, so I thought that this one was kindda different.

Anyway Llama Man wasn't a friend of mine, and I had always been more concerned about the well being of the llama than that of the Llama Man.

Later,

BA

Opps Forgot Some Stuff:

Thought I'd better add some disclaimers:

* All of the tales I'm spinning are based upon facts of some sort.
* Most of the tales will be at least 50% factual.

I'm doing this web thing for a few reasons, and it is, and will be, "a work in progress" for a while:

1. It's an easy way for me to organize my "autobiography" so my kids will know a bit more about me.
2. I find this computer and internet stuff fascinating.
3. I was lucky to be able to start surfing - at least in my opinion - in the "Golden Age" of surfing - I do have some yarns to spin regarding those times.
4. This is an efficient way for some of the old guys to touch bases again - I've received a few e-mails from old (err, long-time) friends I've haven't seen in forty years or so - I think that's way cool.
5. I'm still surfing almost every day - and, at least in my opinion - that's a pretty "boss" thing to write about.
6. I think it will be nice, in a couple of years, to maybe look back at how good - or bad - the surf was in any given stretch of time.
