Woodland resident Lucy Noles Green, who turns 105 today, was honored in November as the oldest member of United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC). She also is among the oldest widows of U.S. World War I veterans.
Green, who is known as "Mrs. Lucy," became a member of the Maj. Gen. Patrick R. Cleburne Chapter of the UDC this summer. She was invited to join the chapter after her neighbor, Pat Harrington, did research for a relative of Mrs. Lucy's.
Harrington obtained the necessary genealogical documentation for UDC membership from Mrs. Lucy's son, Thomas Emmett Green Jr., also of Woodland. She turned the information over to chapter president Lynda Lowery of Talladega in time for the announcement to be made at the national UDC convention this fall in San Diego, Calif.
Harrington said she was pleased about her discovery of such a rare link to the Confederate War.
" 'Eureka, eureka,' I said when I realized this lady was so special," Harrington said. "She's been living so close to me all this time, and I didn't know."
Mrs. Lucy is the granddaughter of Confederate War veteran William Parker Noles, who served in the Co. E 34th Georgia Infantry.
She also is the widow of Thomas Emmett Green, who enlisted in World War I on Sept. 22, 1917 and was discharged Jan. 25, 1919, according to Charles Ester, veteran service representative of the Alabama State Dept. of Veteran Affairs in Randolph County.
Thomas Emmett Green Jr. said his mother is a double amputee because of leg problems but is mentally sharp and seems to feel well each day. "And she takes very little medicine," he said.
He said her strength is limited, but when members of Providence Baptist Church, where Mrs. Lucy attended for most of her life, came caroling recently, Mrs. Lucy "sang along with them in beat time."
Green said his father was discharged from the service before he married Mrs. Lucy. The couple had five sons, four of whom still are living. The senior Thomas Emmett Green was 92 when he died about 20 years ago.
The couple farmed to make a living, Green said. His mother often hoed in the garden and picked cotton.
"While she grew up she also worked in the field, and she plowed with a mule like the boys did," he said.
Mrs. Lucy was raised with 10 siblings, one of whom - K.V. Noles of Anniston - also is still living.
"Mother talks about eating what they raised and buying nothing but sugar and coffee," said Green. "When they didn't have money, she said they would catch a loose chicken or gather some eggs to trade at the local store."
Green said his mother values her membership in the UDC and seems to enjoy the younger "girls" visiting and interviewing her.
"Now she mostly watches television and enjoys talking a little when neighbors drop in."

1. Her obituary was published in The Pacucah Sun on 22 Jul 2003 in Paducah, , KY. Polly Rue Galusha, 77, of Kuttawa died at 8:35 a.m. Tuesday at Lourdes hospital in Paducah.
She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Lyon County.
Surviving are one son, Anthony Galusha of Eddyville; one daughter, Annette Brasher of Eddyville; two sisters, Jean Airington and Opal Robinson, both of Opelika, Ala.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Galusha was preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey Carl Galusha, and two brothers. Her parents were Cremer and Bertha Heftinistall Noles.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Dunn's Funeral Home in Eddyville. The Rev. Mickey Lewis will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
