IMPORTANT HEARTWORM INFORMATION

If you live in an area that has mosquitos, then your dog needs to be on heartworm preventative. Why? Because it only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to infect your dog. Untreated heartworms lead to an early death.

Here are a list of the most common heartworm preventatives on the market. Listed below them are a complete list of the other parasites they help to prevent.

**Fleas/also prevents flea eggs from hatching

All of the above preventatives come in a monthly chewable pill except the Revolution which is a liquid applied between the shoulder blades. Check with your veterinarian to see which would be best for your dog(s).

There is also a relatively new injectable preventative that is given every 6 months, ProHeart 6.

I do not recommend any specific heartworm treatment. You should discuss all possibilities with your vet and between the two of you, decide which preventive is best according to your location. There are possible complications with any medication and this is another reason to discuss these alternatives with your vet.
