Limerick/Dublin Slang

This is a dictionary of Limerick slang words and phrases and their Dub equivalent. All the words and phrases listed are used in Limerick, however they may not actually be exclusively Limerick words, they may be in use anywhere around Ireland, except for Dublin.

Arab's tackie -- as in "my mouth is as dry as an Arab's tackie" discribing how dry your mouth is the morning after the night before

Dublin -- "my mouth feels like sandpaper" *see also -- 'Tackies'

Bullin' -- as in "I was bullin' about my stolen car" being extremely pissed of about something

Dublin -- "I was havin' a freaker about my stolen car"

Batter -- as in "will we go on the batter?" let's go out and get drunk

Dublin -- "will we go on the piss?"

Chip (a) -- as in "can I have a garlic and cheese chip" meaning a bag of chips and not just one chip *NB don't try this one in Dublin or you will just get one chip!

Dublin -- "can I have a bag of garlic and cheese chips"

Ghoul -- as in "yer man is a complete Ghoul" meaning a complete idiot other forms --Ghoul bag

Dublin -- "your man is an absolute wanker"

Go go's -- as in "do you have a go go for my hair?" an elastic to keep your hair up

Dublin -- "do have a scrunchie for my hair?"

Kicked -- as in "yer one is kicked" meaning the person is ugly

Rads - as in "I'll just put my wet tackies on the rads to dry" meaning radiator

Dublin -- just 'radiator'

Rake -- as in "there was a rake of people in the club" meaning there was a lot of people

Readin' (sbd) -- as in "I was readin' him last night" meaning talking about someone behind their back

Dublin -- "havin' a bitch about him"

Scittin' -- as in "I was scittin' myself" meaning falling aroung the place laughing

Dublin -- "I was breakin' my shite laughing"

Scobe -- as in "look at those scobes" meaning knacker

Dublin -- "pack of scangers"

Sham -- as in "how's it goin' sham" meaning 'man'

Dublin -- "how's it goin' head"

Snake -- as in "he was snakin' around the place" meaning to do something or go somewhere on the sly. Other forms 'you snake', snakey

Dublin -- "slid away"

So -- as in "that'll be 25p so..." meaning none, this word is just added on at the end of a sentence for effect

Dublin -- no direct equivalent, possibly 'alright'

Steamer -- as in "he's a steamer" meaning a gay person

Dublin -- "he's a fag"

Dublin -- 'runners'/ old skool runners

Taytos -- as in " will you get me a bag of taytos" meaning crisps (all brands and flavours of)

Sick as a small hospital -- getting really sick

Dublin -- barfin' yer guts up / pucking your ring etc.,

Leave me in -- as in "they would'nt leave me in to the works last night coz I was wearin' taackies" meaning they would'nt let me in (somewhere)

Gonna up Home -- meaning I'm going (home) now

Dublin -- "I'm headin'"

Great time for (sbn) -- as in "I've great time for that girl" meaning she is a very nice person
