The History of
The Order of AKANDE

Chi Phi Delta Fraternity was created on the twenty-ninth day of April, 1992 in Albany, New York. The seven young men, Seth Anthony Freeman, Alistair A. Blake, Keith Allen Wright, Christopher Lee Fugate, Kevin Michael Sherard, Rosheim Christian Lewis, and Arthur Francis O'Meally, had envisioned the creation of this new organization.

In the preliminary stages of Chi Phi Delta, the fraternity stood for the Courage, Pride, and Determination needed, to overcome the struggle of being Black in a white dominated society. The name Chi Phi Delta was later used symbolically. The symbolic term for Chi is an 'X,' this represented the unknown; Chi Phi Delta was a new organization that very few people new anything about. The term 'the unknown,' also represented the member's perspective on their cultural knowledge. The term Phi was used as a representation of the individual within the collective, the 'I' represented the individual, and the 'O' represented the collective. The term Delta represented the change that was needed within the society, and the change that members of the fraternity needed to experience for their personal upliftment.

Chi Phi Delta Fraternity was a community service organization. It later transformed into AKANDE Phi Delta Fraternity, which was founded on the twenty-sixth day of September, 1992 in Albany, New York. The word AKANDE is Yoruba for "One, whose time has come." In implementing AKANDE with Phi Delta, the name AKANDE Phi Delta literally means "One, whose time has come, has gained the knowledge to make a positive change." AKANDE Phi Delta Fraternity was more than a community service organization. Along with fostering Brotherhood, it was also an Afrikan centered society. The nine founders of AKANDE Phi Delta are: Seth Anthony Freeman, Alistair A. Blake, Keith Allen Wright, Christopher Lee Fugate, Kevin Michael Sherard, Rosheim Christian Lewis, Arthur Francis O'Meally, Steven Torres, and Christopher Marlon Lindsay.

The Founder's of AKANDE Phi Delta realized that they had not yet fully evolved as members within the organization; they were not fully developed (born) to AKANDE. That process of development within the organization had taken nine months. The framers within the matrix of AKANDE, were still in the process of gaining the knowledge to make a positive change within themselves to enhance their performance in empowering the Black community. After which, they became born to The Order of AKANDE on the sixth of June, 1993 in Albany, New York.

In an effort to make The Order of AKANDE the society that it needed to be, one more thing had to happen. Both the masculine and the feminine principle had to exist within The Order of AKANDE to make it complete. So, on the twelfth day of May, 1996 in Albany, New York, the process of completion took place. Three young women earned their place and were initiated into The Order of AKANDE. These young women are Maxine Nathalie Cenac, Carla Sharon Wright, and Kerry-Ann Leanora Elliott.
