Pre 18th Century Wars

100 Years war

Crecy

Who: the French, under command of Phillip the 6th, against the English, under command of Edward the 3rd.

What: after the English hgad landed in normandy (seems to be a favorite landing spot, see ww2) they halted near Crecy and there held against 15 raids of the french knights, who had no plan what so ever, and were decimated, mainly by the english longbowmen, which was a new sight in those times.

When: 26 Aug,1346

Where: Crecy, Normandy, France.

Why: This battle in combination with the Orleans battle has had the biggest effect on the 100 years war, and on the world as it is today.

Orleans

Who: French, iunder Joan of Arc and the English.

What: The English started by besieging Orleans on october 23, 1428. People died at both sides, but there wass no momentum in the siege. then in may 1429, Joan of Arc showed up with a relief force and won the victory over the english. after this, the french gained some speed and rolled over the English, forcing them back to their own island.

When: 1428 - 1429

Where: Orleans, france

Why: This battle helped the french to win back their country, if they would not have won, england would probably have rules france for a long time after.

Crusades

Hattin

who: the Saracens, under command of Saladin,  against the crusaders

what: The Saracen army led by Saladin decimated the Crusader army in battle, and after that held jerusalem untill the formation of Israël in 1947. Saladin reached an agreement with the king of england in 1191, which stated that cristians could go on pilgrimage to jerusalem, without being attacked, of showing any sign of violence.

when: 4 Jul 1187

where: Hattin, Israel

why: this battle decided that muslims could hold jerusalem forever, and that crusades were useless, because about 10 years later the agreement with king richard one was made.
