On 3 January 2018, Bangladesh army backed collaborators shot dead Mithun Chakma (22) at Switch Gate in Khagrachari. Mr. Mithun Chakma is a prominent member of UPDF. After attending the court hearing in the morning at Khagrachari district court, Mithun Chakma went home at Aparna Chaudhury Para in Khagrachari district of Bangladesh. A group of Bangladesh army collaborators abducted him from his home, took him to a place known as Switch Gate and shot him in the head and stomach.

On 3 Jan. 2018, Bangladesh army collaborators shot dead Mithun Chakma, a prominent leader of the United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) in Khagrachari. A former president of Pahari Chhatra Parishad (Hill Students Council), Mithun Chakma was arrested under the Information and Communications Technology Act on 12 July 2016 and has been facing trial. He is currently serving as the President of the Democratic Youth Front, an affiliate of the UPDF.

After attending the court hearing in the morning at Khagrachari district court, Mithun Chakma went home at Aparna Chaudhury Para under Khagrachari district of Bangladesh. A group of Bangladesh army collaborators abducted him from his home, took him to a place known as Switch Gate and shot him in the head and stomach. His dead body was recovered and he was declared dead in the hospital.

Bangladesh army collaborators knew that he would attend the court hearing today. General Secretary of the UPDF, Rabi Shankar Chakma in a press statement has condemned the murder of Mithun Chakma and called upon the government of Bangladesh to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Bangladesh army personnel stationed in the Chittagong Hill Tracts created a collaborator group known as the Mukosh Bahini (Mask Force) to counter the indigenous peoples political movement for autonomy and implementation of the 1997 CHTs Peace Accord. The UPDF, one of the political parties of the indigenous peoples of the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh, is active in the Khagrachari district.
