Bengali settlers attack indigenous people in Matiranga

On 21 February 2016, Muslim settlers attack indigenous people in Matiranga, Khagrachari. More than a dozen indigenous people were injured in the attack.

Muslim settlers carried out the attack after the dead body of a settler named Azizul Hakim was recovered in the morning of 21 February from a jungle near a tourist spot Richang Zharna at Alutila. Alutila is about 10 kilometers south-west of Khagrachari town.

In reprisal to settler's death, Muslim settlers gathered at Matiranga bazaar at noon, forced people to shut their shops, blocked Khagrachari–Chittagong road and indiscriminately attacked the indigenous people.

Muslim settlers also chanted anti-indigenous slogans and vandalized vehicles during their rally.

Among the injured is an 18-year old student named Uchimong Marma, son of Aungyo Jai Marma from Mongla Para in Laxmichari who was travelling to Khagrachari along with his friend Mong Sano Marma.

Mong Sano Marma of the same village in Laxmichari who was at first thought to have gone missing, was taken to police station, before being admitted to hospital for treatment.

Uchimong and Mong Sano were on their way to Khagrachari when the settlers stopped the bus at Matiranga bazaar, pulled them out and severely beat them.

Both of them have been admitted to Matiranga Health Complex with multiple injuries.

The identity of the other injured Jummas could not be immediately known.
