Bengali settlers attack indigenous Buddhist people in Mahalchari

On 29 October 1995, acting on the orders of Bangladesh army's Lt. Col. Jakir Hasan, Muslim settlers attacked indigenous Buddhist people in Mahalchari.

Mohammad Abdul Matin led hundreds of Muslim settlers of Changrachari cluster village of Mahalchari to attack the nearby indigenous Buddhist village at Changrachari Mouza. The Muslim settlers were armed with machetes, knives and spears. They shouted Islamic slogans, hacked and beat the indigenous Buddhist villagers, robbed all valuable goods, destroyed household articles and houses, burned down houses and stole fruit and vegetable from the gardens. However, many villagers were able to flee their homes just before the attack and thus narrowly escaped the onslaught. Some of the victims were:

  1. Mr. Hla Aungsu Chowdhury (45), the son of Mr. Labra Chai Chowdhury, was severely beaten and hacked on his right arm and left leg causing very serious injuries;
  2. Mr. Aung Jai Marma (60), a teacher of the local Primary School had his property looted, household goods broken into pieces, and bamboos from his garden stolen;
  3. Mr. Pal U Marma (55), the son of Mr. Kyaw Jari Marma, had his house plundered and then torched;
  4. Mr. Mome Marma (50), an ex-member of the local Union Council had his property looted and household things and the home broken into pieces;
  5. Mr. Ripchu Marma (58), the son of Mr. Atho Marma, had his home ransacked and bamboos from his garden stolen.
