Repatriated indigenous refugees hold press conference in Dhaka

On 12 Dec l994, the leaders of "The 16-Point Bastabayan (Realisation) Committee of the Repatriated Jumma Refugees" held a press conference at the National Press Club in Dhaka.

The repatriated refugee leaders emphatically declared that

  1. Repatriated Jumma Refugees had not yet been rehabilitated properly
  2. Repatriated Jumma Refugees had not yet got back their homes, villages and lands
  3. Repatriated Jumma Refugees had not yet received BD Taka 5,000 per family as the subsistence grant for buying house hold goods
  4. Repatriated Jumma Refugees had not yet received BD Taka 8,000 as the agricultural grant for buying a pair of bullocks
  5. Repatriated Jumma Refugees had not yet been given educational and job facilities
  6. Repatriated Jumma Refugees had not been receiving even rations as promised by the Bangladesh Government

They also said that many of the Repatriated Jumma Refugees were being harassed by the Bangladesh army and police authorities on the basis of the previous false and fabricated charges brought against them before they had to flee to India although the Bangladesh Government had announced General Amnesty for all the Jumma Refugees.

Perhaps it is worth mentioning that Mr. Fazlul Hasan Yusuf the Secretary of the Special Affairs Division under Prime Minister's Secretariat, has not done anything to address the genuine grievances of the helplese Repatriated Jumma Refugees.
