On 19-20 February 2010 Bangladesh army backed Muslim settlers attacked the indigenous Buddhist people at Baghaichari. Many indigenous houses were burnt down including Buddhist temples. The aim of the attack was to drive out the indigenous Chakma Buddhists and grab their land. Members of the Bangladesh army in CHT.

Bangladesh army terrorizes indigenous people in Matiranga

On 10 Jan 1989, Bangladesh army personnel from 31 EBR, Khagrachari Zone, 31 EBR from Betchari Camp, 1st EBR from Bizitola Camp and also from Alutilla and Matiranga Camp jointly carried out an operation against the indigenous Buddhist village Dhalya in Matiranga, Khagrachari district.

During the operation Bangladesh army inhumanly beat and tortured indigenous inhabitants. As a result, 27 Chakma and Tripura families were compelled to abandon their ancestral village and are now living in total uncertainty. The victims are:

  1. Mr. Parikshit Chakma (40), son of Mr. Abhimanya Chakma of Dhalya in Matiranga. Bangladesh army accused him of giving food to Shanti Bahini. Bangladesh army tied him with rope and severely beat him.
  2. Mr. Abhimanya Chakma (60) of Dhalya in Matiranga. Bangladesh army inhumanly beat him with bamboo sticks and wooden block.
  3. Mr. Nutan Jiban Chakma (61), son of Mr. Buddha Moni Chakma of Dhalya in Matiranga. Bangladesh army inhumanly beat and tortured him during interrogation. Bangladesh army hit him with a rifle butt, kicked him to the ground and asked if he possessed illegal gun.
  4. Mr. Bira Shanka Chakma alias Barpeda (55), son of Mr. Rangachan Chakma. Bangladesh army kicked him to the ground and asked where the Karbari or village head had gone. As he could not tell them, Bangladesh army further beat him.
  5. Mr. Suniti Ranjan Chakma (45), son of Mr. Bengya Moni Chakma. Bangladesh army severely beat him when he said that there was no Shanti Bahini member in the village. Bangladesh army personnel charged him with an allegation that Shanti Bahini members had come to the village previous day.
  6. Mr. Jhakkya Chakma (20), son of Mr. Kali Mohan Chakma. Bangladesh army severely beat him as he was unable to give information about the Shanti Bahini during interrogation by the army personnel.
  7. Mr. Chandra Dhar Chakma (70) of Naniachar was a guest of Mr. Suniti Ranjan Chakma. He was also beaten severely by the army personnel.
  8. Mr. Suniti Chakma (21) of Dhalya, Matiranga. He was subjected to severe beating with a false allegation by the army personnel that he gave shelter to the Shanti Bahini. He was taken at the army camp where he was tortured inhumanly and later he was released.
  9. Miss Shanti Rani Chakma (20), daughter of Mr. Kamal Charan Chakma of Dhalya, Matiranga. Bangladesh army molested her and severely beat her with gun stock.
  10. Mr. Sonadhan Tripura (37) of Dhalya, Matiranga. He was falsely charged by the Bangladesh army personnel with an allegation that he gave information to the Shanti Bahini about the army personnel. He was beaten severely by the Bangladesh army personnel.
