On 22 September 2012 Bangladesh army backed Muslim settlers attacked indigenous Buddhist people in Rangamati. When the indigenous people counter attacked in self defence Bangladesh army took side with the Muslim settlers. 76 indigenous people were injured and numerous indigenous properties were destroyed.

Dr. Shusovon Dewan is an indigenous physician in Rangamati. Muslim settlers mercilessly beat him when they found him in the street.


Bangladesh army torture indigenous people in Rangamati

On 8-9 April 1988, Bangladesh army of 9th EBR from Suvolong Zone led by Lt. Col. M. Shabbir Hossain and from Kharikhyong Camp led by Capt. Shabbir carried out a military operation against the indigenous inhabitants of Lekyang Chara, Durkheiya and Tang Tulya of Bonduk Bhanga Mouza in Rangamati. During the operation, Bangladesh army tortured many indigenous people. The victims are:

  1. Mr. Kamini Ranjan Chakma (18), son of Mr. Brisha Ketu Chakma of Lekyang Chara, Bonduk Bhanga, Rangamati. He was arrested on 8 April 1988 and taken to the army camp. BD army subjected him to physical torture, covered his face with a piece of cloth and poured water on the face. BD army hung him upside down and inhumanly beat him. He was blind folded and thrown into a dark pit and kept in detention for 22 days.
  2. Mr. Biraj Kumar Chakma (38), son of Mr. Manik Chandra Chakma of Durkheiya, Bonduk Bhanga, Rangamati. He was arrested on 9 April 1988. He was tortured and detained as above.
  3. Mr. Chitra Bilash Chakma (50), son of Mr. Chikyadhan Chakma of Tang Tulya Mukh, Bonduk Bhanga, Rangamati. On 9 April 1988, he was going to Rangamati by a boat. Bangladesh army stopped the boat, tortured him, hit him with a gun stock. As a result he started bleeding profusely.
  4. Master Deba Chakma (16), son of Mr. Chitra Bilash Chakma, address as above. The victim was subjected to severe beating and torture along with his father as above.
  5. Mr. Chandra Kumar Chakma (28), son of Mr. Bharat Chandra Chakma, address as above.
  6. Master Padin Kumar Chakma (14), son of Mr. Bidya Chakma, address as above.
  7. Master Benga Chakma (17), son of Mr. Dumulya Chakma, address as above.
  8. Master Janak Dhan Chakma (14), son of Mr. Fulfutya Chakma, address as above.
