On 22 September 2012 Bangladesh army backed Muslim settlers attacked indigenous Buddhist people in Rangamati. When the indigenous people counter attacked in self defence Bangladesh army took side with the Muslim settlers. 76 indigenous people were injured and numerous indigenous properties were destroyed.

Dr. Shusovon Dewan is an indigenous physician in Rangamati. Muslim settlers mercilessly beat him when they found him in the street.


Bangladesh army torture indigenous Chakma Buddhists in Baghaichari

On 21 Nov. 1986, Bangladesh army of 41 EBR from the army camp at Karengatoli led by Major Abdul Bari carried out a military operation against the indigenous Buddhist people of Tulaban in Baghaichari, Rangamati district. Bangladesh army arrested 4 indigenous Chakma Buddhists, severely beat and tortured them. The arrested persons were stripped of their clothes and electric shocks were applied to their bodies. The victims are:

  1. Mr. Shyamol Dhon Chakma (25), son of Mr. Sindhu Chakma of Tulaban, Baghaichari.
  2. Mr. Batya Chakma (26), son of Mr. Kamini Ranjan Chakma, address as above.
  3. Mr. Gulomoni Chakma (25), son of Mr. Sonaram Chakma, address as above.
  4. Mr. Dalda Chakma (22), son of Mr. Sonaram Chakma, address as above.
