ICQ Help
      #356304 - 2002/09/12 05:44 PM

Hi guys,

I just got ICQ and would love a little help! I just have a few questions:

1. How do I set it so that only the people on my buddy list (or the equivalent) know that I'm on/can ICQ me? I've already gotten a message from a random person, and I haven't been on 2 minutes!

2. How do I find all of your ICQ numbers?

Mine is 169483930

Thanks guys...the newbie is a little clueless!

1. I've got no idea, sorry! I just let everybody see me, then I close the window and 'ignore' somebody if I don't know them.

2. I just looked at the profiles of people. If they have a number, I added it to my list.

I've already ICQ'ed you my request to add me to your list, but just in case, my number is:

159188679.

(Personally, I could use a list of everybody's ICQ's, too. I've only got half of the people here on my list...)

I'm on ICQ with her now.

But ICQ STILL sucks.

Hey guys...

Well, I'm on (tentatively!) thanks to much help from T'Bonz! I may have accidently deleted someone's request for me to add them--if you sent me an add request within the last 10 minutes, please do resend. Aatrek, I got you.

Btw, ICQ is pretty nosy...it started searching my e-mail to find out who had an ICQ address! It was kind of funny though. Where do they come up with this stuff?

Personally, I think that AOL Instant Messenger is the way to go.

Say what you will about AOL and its service, but AIM really is a great IM system. Something like 93% of my college (1500 students) uses it, over half of my professors...

Get Bonz to send you all of our contacts.

Remove any information you may have entered about yourself (like location, interests, languages, etc.), and that should help a lot in cutting down on random messages.

I'll try to get them mailed to her before I leave; for now I gave her C, L and the admins plus her co-mods in ENT.

Why not just use the contact function in ICQ? Superfast and efficient.

Was this random message from a person called "Linda"?

Both my brother AND myself got this person when we set up out accounts...

Anyhoo... I actually prefer AIM better, though you can use ICQ lite or use Trillian, either of which is much better then the main ICQ program.

Anyway, as a fellow mod, (abietly of another forum) please add me to your ICQ list!

(Also I would suggest you have always authorised as your option for who you allow to appear on you IM. It gives you the option of weeding out any undesirables - like "Linda"...)

I got a message from "Linda" just moments after I registered ICQ. But thankfully it has that nice little Ignore list.

I have never had any problems with ICQ. Then again, I only use it for contacting TrekBBS staff.

Top41, I will be sending oyu a confirmation request soon. SO that you will know it is me, I have the same ICQ username as I have on the board. And I can't urge you enough to remove any and all of your personal information in there. It really does cut down the drive-by annoyances like "Linda".

Also, when you bring up the main ICQ panel, down at the bottom is a button labeled "Main". Click on it, and you will see an option labeled "Security and Privacy Permissions". That will allow you to set up a variety of lists to control whether others see you onnline or not. That's a good place to become familiar with. If you have any questions, ICQ or email any of us and we'll be only too happy to assist.

I don't like the actual ICQ program itself, hence in general, I prefer Trillian, which additionally supports the other three too... (MSN, AIM, Y!)... although it still has problems with ICQ contact list authorisations, and I don't much like the .74 version.

I adore real ICQ. It has flowers. You can configure the noises. It has wonderful privacy options. Its history and file transfer functions are invalubal. And you can skin it.

Just use EyeBall. It supports MSN, AIM, YIM and its own messenger system.

That way, you can use real ICQ and only have 2 IMs running

Wow, my head is spinning with all of these different programs! I decided to just go with ICQ at work for now...I figure I'll learn one program at a time.

On the weekends, I might have an AOL Instant Messenger program (it hasn't been working lately, but I'm going to try it again this weekend). My user name for that is Diamond Girl Tess. Who else has AOL?

Btw, I got a message from that Linda person too! She said "Hi from Europe!" or something like that! Do you think she's online all the time and contacts all new people, or do you think she's just someone from ICQ checking the program? How odd.

Thanks for sending me your ICQ numbers! My contact list is probably 1/3 done.

Probably an automated sell-you-this robot. They're not real people, they just seem like real people then spout meaningless advertising (often porn) at you as soon as you respond. Reach for the block button...

Oh, and as for the other networks, I'm i5000m on Yahoo or AIM, i5000m@hotmail.com on MSN or 153255971 on ICQ.

That's so devious! It figures they'd have that on ICQ, though, since e-mail and the internet work that way. Ah, well, I'm "invisible" now to everyone but you guys!

Yeah... unfortunately ICQ is the easiest one of the four to target, since you can just start at '1' and keep going upwards...

With 60 million users each on MSN and ICQ, more on AIM, they're worth a would-be-advertiser's time, unfortunately.

That does make sense...initially I had assumed it would be harder, being random numbers and all, but it's not like advertisers care about names or anything like that.

Ugh--spam is everpresent!
