People, change your password. Change it regularly and change it to something that's not obvious. Keep your Trek BBS password seperate from anything else.DON'T use obvious Trekkish passwords. Voyager, Sulu, Kirk, Janeway - if it's easy to guess, please don't use it. Ideally, passwords should include a mixture of lower and uppercase lettera and at least one number or character. I'm sorry if this is obvious to you guys. But the same problems keep arising. We end up having the trauma of the past few days because of a little lack of thought. Pick a good password. Change it every so often. Please. I cannot impress upon you how important this is.

you know, lisa, we're getting awefully mixed messages from you guys.first you tell us "there's nothing we can do to make this place more secure if there's a leak" ... then you tell us "everyone change your password immediatly, we need to make this place more secure" which is it? if you actually think security is a problem, then let's do more than just asking people to change their passwords. if you think security isn't a problem and there is a leak, then why bother with URGENT requests like this?

There's nothing we can do to make this place more secure. It's as secure as the people who use it. If moderators have passwords like 'Picard' then security of this place is worthless. Because there are some seriously screwed up individuals who will sit here trying differnt moderator names and passwords until they hit paydirt.

So you're saying, that you have proof that it was a hacked password (such as "picard") as opposed to a leak? The difference is important. Off to change mine again, even though I never, ever make them easy to hack.

I seriously defy anyone to guess my passwords - at least the ones I use for here. When I became mod I changed my passwords for this board to ones I don't use anywhere else, and I've changed them regularliy. Just changed them again.Personally, I think you're wrong. We have a leaker. And Wordin has said as much.

So your saying they are using brute force password attempts to try to get in? Shouldn't there be a log of that type of activity? As far as 'feeding' paranoia goes, I'd much prefer someone here was being silly and feeding info to the Trollboyz than to think that this place can be attacked simply by trying passwords until one of them works.

Yes, unless we are all amazing idiots about security, it would have to be a leaker. If it was an issue of hacking passwords then it wouldn't be a span of months between postings of this stuff. It would happen more often. These guys are dependent on us to give them the info.

Vert, not to be pert, but if that is the outlook why bother logging it at all?Is there a way within the current software to varify off a user ID that makes oh 50 or so incorrect login attempts? It might annoy the person being attacked, but they can request a new PWD per usual - and as always they would be the only ones with the proper email account to recieve it. Or even simply an email being sent to an admin when an account has massive failed log in attempts so they can take a look. If the old software doesn't, could we verify if the new one would?
