Opinion on a sig
      #846521 - 2003/02/26 06:29 AM

In this thread in MA, the user named philgthompson is posting the sig "Die Condolezza, Die". Now, after the hubbub regarding Stewey's sig, should we be permitting this one? I am inclined to ask him to change it, but I wanted to ask my esteemed colleagues first.

I noticed that one, too. I strongly feel it should be changed. It's just totally inappropriate and trolling. I agree with Neroon that if Stewey's sig rightfully doesn't fly, this one shouldn't either.

If threatening B&B is no good, neither is threatening a government official.

It may not be a direct threat (offering to do the honors himself), but if it were the President's name, it'd be a federal offense. I'm not sure if any such laws extend to Ms. Rice.

I'd at least ask him to change it, and if he goes along, no harm, no foul. If he refuses, well...

Frankly, I'm getting a little tired of TNZ creeping out of TNZ. I was quietly against really changing much about the forum, but its ways are threatening to spill over into the rest of the Board. I can't be the only one to notice an increase in comments like "This thread needs to be in TNZ in order to properly respond." Veiled flames and aggression on the Board; these are what the forum has wrought.

^and those who say "this needs to go to TNZ" infuriate me. I generally tell them that TNZ is not the only place to have a non-fluff conversation and that you can actually discuss something without flames. At least admiralelectron has finally quite whining every other Misc. post about threads not belonging and crying for people to be warned.

Can, open. Worms, everywhere...

IMHO...Stewey was intentionally trolling with his signature, but then again, Sokar went around with the signature "Voyager Makes Baby Jesus Cry", and was never asked to change it. What about other anti-(insert show here) signatures and avatars? How far does it go?

The Condoleeza sig is pretty bad, I think. That's a real person, and probably shouldn't be allowed.

I think this is going to be a giant hassle trying to police all these avatars and signatures. There will always be people who push the limits for their amusement or some misguided sense of protest. There will also always be overly sensitive people who whine and complain about the smallest offense to their sensibilities. It's a no win situation unless we can have a very simple clear policy that covers it all. And I'm afraid that has so far proven quite elusive... The best we can probably do is Admin discretion, period. ("I know it when I see it") Lisa could be the Supreme Court, but I doubt she wants to involved in signature policing...

We had the problems with sigs before the new software. they are just in the spotlight right now thanks to Stewey.

He's been trolling ENT for a while and the sig fits right in with a pattern of behavior. If he weren't trolling in his posts as well, I'd be more inclined to let the sig slide. he just put "enterfake" in his sig because he was mad he couldn't put it in topic headers any more.

The "Die Condalezza, die" sig needs to go. theposter said in MA he didn't really want her dead, just out of work, but that doesn't excuse the sig. It still calls for the death of another person. "It sounds better than 'Resign Condalezza, resign' " does not let him off the hook for he sig.

This follows on from the Stewey stuff - I don't know how many times he has done it, but I just wandered upon this comment by him in GTD. If he's been doing it everywhere, I'd expect a general warning or two from an administrator to come at some point, so I'll hold off from saying anything now.

Edit: He's acting like a two year old here, too. And again. This is just as annoying as "Enterfake".

Oh good grief. What a baby. Do we have an emotional age limit? If not, can we implement one? Or at least give him a time out so he can cool his jets?

^^LOL...if only! He'll just have to get over it. I'm afraid he might be making duals, though...just yesterday some guy linked to a petition Stewey had written. Suspicious to say the least:

http://www.trekbbs.com/threads/showthreaded.php?Board=UBB28&Number=845499

Still, Stewey isn't normally downright rude like this guy, so it's not necessarily him.

Well, after reading M.A. and the threads in the links above, I just wanted to give a vote of confidence to Neroon and Lisa. You guys have been MORE than patient with Stewey, and I commend you for that!

Much more patient than I would have been! That's for sure!

Just wanted to point that out, cus I bet you guys feel as if you have been living in a war zone for the past couple of days!

I am going to ask philgthompson to change his sig, simply because this is a real life person, a government official no less.

As for Stewey.... it's probably pretty obvious to everyone reading his posts that he is throwing a tantrum, and behaving just as you analogize. Leave him alone for now. If we jump on him for htis, we will simply look like bullies. However, if we take the high road, it will come out better for everyone.

Exactly. The rules for posts and pictures apply to sigs and avatars. It's not that people don't understand the rules. 99% of the board has no trouble posting acceptable stuff. The problem comes from the 1% who are either too fucking stupid to know how to behave or are pretending to be. Whether it's column A or column B or a little bit of both is pretty much irrelvant. They will be educated.

As for the signature in question, political statements are ok. Death threats are not. If philgthompson still has it up when I make it over to MA I will remove it for him and issue the warning.

No, don't do that just yet. I only told him a minute agao to change it. He needs time to see that, doesn't he?

Incidentally, I just PM'd him with the same request. Please give him a reasoable amount of time to act.

^ Well, since you asked nicely I won't warn him. However, death threats are never kosher. We used to give double warnings for that and I kind of wish we still did.

I did remove the signature from his profile though. I'm not comfortable having that signature broadcasted across the BBS while we wait for him to log on again to change it.
