Moderating styles
      #767671 - 2003/02/11 02:27 AM

I was wondering how you veterans handle moderating. I know I have no room to complain about my forum's size . but its getting a bit tedious trying to read every single new reply in every topic each day. How do you handle covering your various forums? (Open to any suggestions)

I don't budge from my computer.

If there are a lot of responses, you're usually okay with just scanning them. If someone has done something wrong, you'll probably find about a dozen follow on posts pointing it out. That makes it hard to miss.

I'm rather lucky, since nothing ever happens in the lounges, aside from baba who has confessed yet again to being hammer, and Johnny Rico for some reson.

I look at threads I think will generate the most conflict, since that's where I think moderation would be needed the most. I just skim, sometimes gloss, over the rest. I can pick out a flame war just by taking a single glance (four years on the same board will do that to you).

When I was on GTD, I'd only go up to the point where I'd see a thread that was locked by one of my co-mods, at which point I used to say to myself, "oh, looks like someone else was here, I don't need to look any further!"

Reading every single new reply when you're online is probably the worst thing you could do.

I guess I'm doing the worst thing, then.

Only having 4 or so threads to moderate at the moment does help.

I thought we talked about that and agreed that we were just going to let Enterpriser handle it all and slack off all the time.

I read all new posts when I come on, usually twice a day. The "Notify moderator" button gives you a little leeway, trusting that folks will let you know about something way out of line. I like to see what people are saying in the forum, and reading a lot gives me a better sense of the individuals who post. That's important when looking at context, and understanding a poster's style when there's a question...

So, between 1001001's diligence and my utter lack of responsibility, it's obvious why the VOY Forum runs so smoothly. Teamwork, baby!

Damn, Woim, you crack me up!!! Random outbursts of laughter at work look a little weird.

I read or skim each thread in my letter category. I try to read carefully, but when I have the letter S, and every damn thread is "Stigma Sucks" or "Stigma Was Great" or "Stigma Broke Continuity" or "Stigma--the Ultimate Example of Good COntinuity," etc, etc...it's hard to read as carefully as I'd like. But I read carefully enough to find trouble if there is any.

I come online and read all new posts in the DS9 forum twice a day - sometimes more. Now granted, I don't read them all really carefully. I skim them *all*, and read closely a) topics that I'm really interested in as a poster and plan to post on myself and b) posts by members of a group I call "The Usual Suspects" (aka. baba, hammer, Johnny Rico, Nebula1, and a couple of other folks) who have long and colorful histories of getting in fights, trolling and flaming in the DS9 forum.

Other than that, I rely on the inevitable PMs that are sure to come from a couple of folks the minute something of interest happens.

I read every post - though I confess I only skim stories for adult material. I'd go nuts if I tried to read every story, as well have having no time for work. I find the best way is to pop into the forum as often as I can. Three new threads every couple of hours is better than twenty once a day. It also means I'm there to knock trouble on the head or answer queries more promptly.

And yes, I do think we ought to look at every post. Even if you don't actually read it. If the workload is too much BB, maybe you need a co-mod.

I WISH I had a webcam. Those photos you see are actually done by me holding my digital camera as far away from myself as possible, and taking the shot.

And don't you wax poetic about resisting de crack. I've got hard evidence of you begging me for it.

I read all of mine. We of course split them four ways in ENT.

I read very quickly, that helps. If the thread looks interesting, I read it normal speed. If it's not my cuppa, I read in "scan mode" quickly reading to make sure that everything is hunky-dory.

The new software has sped up my patrol. I LOVE the feature that takes us to the last unread post.

Reading and skimming are two different things. The vast majority of poster's posts are actually pretty safe. It's the ones that could lead to trouble that you actually go and take a longer look at.

Star Trek topics in the Star Trek forums tend to get reptitive after a while. You know the topics and what everyone's going to say so well, after a while that all you really need to do is skim.

And, even then, just check twice or three times a day. You don't need to hit refresh constantly to see if someone's made another reply to some random topic two minutes later!
