Folks,
You should have noticed me giving an indication in the QSF forum that there will be some new rules. Thought I'd give you a sneak preview of a couple of tweaks to the BBS ruels I made and I'd like us to start using soon.
You can view them here.
Pretty much the same. However:
Warnings: we need to be clear on this section. Warnings are NOT punishments (a phrase that will be in the final version, thanks to AndyDearest.
Post one: Lisa is an idiot Post Two: Savvik is a fuckwit and Bonz is a bitch
How many warnings to this member? One, for flaming. Although he flames multiple people, multiple times, he only offends against ONE section of the rules. So he gets ONE warning for flaming.
If in his next post after the warning has been issued, he flames again, then you give another warning.
Post two slightly altered: Savvik is a fuckwit and Bonz is a bitch, here's Lisa's phone number
NOW you give two warnings, since two bits of the policy are broken: flaming and privacy.
You see?
We shouldn't ever be tailoring the amount of warnings we give to the punishment we want the person to recieve.
Emphasis on Common Sense: Of course, the above doesn't mean that if you meet the definitions of any of the above infractions you will immediately get a warning. The best general guideline can be summed up in one phrase: use common sense when you post. You'll be given little sympathy if asked not to do something by a member of staff, you do it anyway, receive a warning and then complain afterwards.
If you reach the end of the warnings in the process, chances are you wont get unbanned.
Couple of sentences in there about the MA forum.
This is a WIP. It needs tweakign and obvious mistakes removing. But I thought I'd show you lot now anyway.
I' also thinking of holding another mod chat over IRC if people woudl like to come along. Suggestions for a time and day of the week welcomed. Just not after 9:30 GMT please, if you want me to be awake towards the end of it.

Did you know that the board rules contradict themselves? Read...
(under the 'Adult Content' section:)
Quote:
The moderator may decide to give you a warning, or if you were deliberately posting pornographic content on the BBS even two warnings.
Quote:
Warnings should never be given out in order to ban a user, and more than one should never be issued for the same offense. You need to be warned twice - commit two infractions against the board rules - before you will be banned.

Is this how we explain it when the person flames two non-mods and only one warning is given? Man, MA could get busier than usual.
I agree that it helps to restrain ourselves when it comes to the number of warnings, and Lord knows we've made much of this mess ourselves. Yet, common sense tells me that people will pick up on this and abuse the flexibility by hauling off on a whole slew of people at once.

I kinda have a small problem with this. Separate posts are separte actions. If in post one, some one flames, a few posts pop up in the interim and then he flames somone else, those are two separate and distinct actions and should be dealt with as such. If he flamed three people in one post, it would make sense to only give one warning.
Example:
Post one by Flamer: Mary is a stupid (expletive) interim post by John: On topic interim post by Sally: off topic but non-offensive Post two by Flamer: John and Sally are stupid (expletive) too.
Those are two very distinct and individual actions. There was time passed and intervening actions to allow Flamer to NOT break the rules again. For that I would envision two warnings, one per post.
If someone takes your wallet, then takes Susie's wallet twoo, they don't get one petty charge. Each action is its own charge.
If that is not how you want it to work, then that is fine, I can live with it, but we have some smart and obnoxious posters on this board who, as Neroon pointed out, will take advantage of it. Mary, John and Sally are not going to be happy either.
Other than that, the rules look good to me. I like the changes.

OTOH, I can see the wisdom in issuing only one warning even if there were multiple offenses, if no warning was issued in between. Such as in your example Kass. It is a true thing that people are overly sensitive on this board, and we as a staff are partly to blame for that by issuing warnings at the drop of a hat.
Where I am concerned is if someone sharp enough to realize we don't give out 1 warning per offense, takes the opportunity to flame several people in one or two posts. And I mean more than two or three different people.
I agree with Lisa in that we need to be more judicious in handing out warnings. Personaly, I'd rather see the warnings/bans dropped altogether, and just kick people that don't pay attention when we caution them. It'd ease the administrative quagmire we have stepped into.
(gotta get that router thing fixed. I miss you're avatar Kass )

I'm quite happy for one warning to be applied in the case of flaming, trolling, spamming, whatever.
However, a couple of distinctions need to be made. Are we talking about warning once for offences that might occur in different threads, and indeed different forums? If this is the case, how will this be managed? A related question is the case, for example, if someone were to post 10 porn pics in the same thread. Will this now receive one warning, or is this immaterial since we'd go straight to account locking for an individual who did this?
On an unrelated note, I propose the following updates with regard to the new software:
Change this:
Quote:
Each forum is assigned one or more moderators. Their names are listed on the front page, in the right-most column. In addition, their names are listed at the top of the thread list of each forum, and if you click on their names there you can send them an email. When posting on the BBS, the legend under their name says 'High Guard Moderator'.
To this:
Quote:
Each forum is assigned one or more moderators. Their names are listed on the front page, under each forum description, and appear in green when they post. In addition, their names are listed at the bottom of the thread list and the threads within their forum, which you may click to view their profiles.
Change this:
Quote:
There are four admins at the Trek BBS. They are the four moderators of the "Questions, Suggestions & Feedback" forum, and the legend under their name says 'Administrator'.
To this:
Quote:

Remove this, since no-one except us can see the BR now:
Quote:
The Briefing Room is only accessible to moderators and administrators, and is used to discuss administrative matters.
Change this:
Quote:
At the bottom of the forum list, you will find a link to Ten Forward, which includes a set of "officer's lounges". Depending on the rank you have (and thus depending on the number of posts you have made), you can access one of the lounges and use it to chat with other users of the same rank. More on rank can be found in our list of frequently asked questions.

Kass, the way you highlight makes warnings PUNISHMENTS rather than indications that a poster has corssed the line of the board rules. That's all they are - us pointing out that if they continue, there will be consequenses. Thus, if you flame three members in a thread, you only need one warning - stop it or else. If they don't stop, then more warnings are justified. We shouldn't be thinking about adapting warnings to severity.
Verteron: Wow, I don't have to proofread now
If someone posts ten porn pics in a thread, chances are you won't have to worry about issuing warnings coz they'll get their account locked - full stop. A moderator, however, woudl issue one warning in public and start shouting at me to ban the nonce in private.
And yep, it;s seperate threads, not forums. We need some way to keep things distinct, and I've always thought of one thread as ne conversation.
Katie : Thanks, I'll sort that out.

Not a punishment, but a consequence for their actions. The posters here aren't stupid and they know when they say these things that they are not allowed. To do so repeatedly is simply disrespectful to others and this board.
I have no problem doing it your way, but I think our less well behaved posters are goint to take advantage of it.

I really don't think any of us go overboard with warnings now. I just want to say that for the record.
However, I agree that informal warnings (or Friendly Reminders, as I call them in VOY) are far more effective, not only for compliance, but for the overall tone and feel of the board.

A few notes:
Quote:
From the Board Rules
Multiple Threads: There are a lot of registered members on this board. If everyone who wanted to comment on the latest episode had to do so in one thread, no one would be able to access this thread anymore. The amount of threads on a certain topic is regulated by supply and demand, and multiple threads on the same subject will only be closed if they really are absolutely identical to another thread.
I've noticed in a few forums this isn't exactly followed to the letter. Threads on the same topic are closed or consolidated. It really varies by what forum you're in whether or not you can have multiple threads on the same topic. Personally, while I understand the desire to consolidate, I'd prefer that we give the posters the freedom to be redundant. Either way, we should decide whether or not we're actually going to abide by this and then do it consistently.
Quote:
From the Board Rules
In order to protect those posters who are minors, you cannot post NC-17 or X-Rated material anywhere on the BBS, or link to such material.
In practice we're also prohibiting "R" rated material (nudity involving the genetals, buttocks, or female nipple) not just the hardcore stuff that would be rated a "NC-17." The wording should be tweaked to recognize that.
We've also instituted some taste policing for the nearly "R" stuff. Specifically, in ENT we've advised posters that linking to the semi-nude Maxim photos of Jolene is allowed, but they shouldn't post them on the board or in their avatars. This was kind of an ad-hoc decision the ENT Mods made when the forum started, and now with avatars being populated over the whole board, IMO we should make sure we're consistent board wide.
Quote:
From the Board Rules
The material that you posted will be edited out by a moderator.
Language needs to change from "will" to "may" since a Moderator can't edit out an avatar.
Quote:
From the Board Rules
The moderator may decide to give you a warning, or if you were deliberately posting pornographic content on the BBS even two warnings.
If we're going to the only one warning per offense guideline then this should be modified as well.
Quote:
Board Rules
Don't expect any moderators to be lenient over this. Your material will be edited out, and the moderator may decide to give you a warning - depending on the severity of what you posted, you may even get two.
Once again, "will" to "may" and just 1 warning.
Quote:
Board Rules
Flames Obviously, you cannot insult other people. You may disagree with someone's opinion, but you may not attack the person themselves for posting that opinion. Do not use offensive language with regard to other people.
I miss the old language that said something like "Do not reply to a flame with a flame. You cannot flame people and then claim to have been just defending yourself. A flame is a flame is a flame." Someone actually tried to use this excuse on me about a month ago, and I wanted to quote this section, and found that it got lost somewhere in the last policy update.
Quote:
Board Rules
When posting images, please make sure you do not post more than 50-60kb worth of photos, as a courtesy to those with slower connections.
With the new server and software does this still apply?
Quote:
Board Rules
You can, for instance, ask about the "romance plot in [episode name]," but not about "the Janeway/Chakotay kiss in [episode name]."
Since nothing VOY-ish is spoilery anymore may I suggest replacing J/C with Reed/Hoshi?
Quote:
Board Rules (Etiquette)
Do not state your opinions as fact - doing this will get you into a lot of trouble with other members who disagree. A lot of flame wars start off by a person stating an opinion as fact.
This is without a doubt the dumbest thing in the Board Rules. It was the dumbest thing in the old policy, and for some reason it's still here. Everything anyone ever says on this board is by it's very definition an opinion. I've been expressing my opinions all over this post. Should I be expected to post "IMO" every other sentence? This is ridiculous. Anyone with half a brain already understands that everyone else is just posting their opinions. Rather than ask people to put passive aggressive disclaimers in their posts, why not just encourage them to post with civility?
Quote:
Board Rules (Etiquette)
When starting a new thread, keep the title short. Long titles often cause the posts in that topic to go over the page - especially at lower resolutions.
There's a new character limit on thread titles. What is it? Is this section neccessary any longer?
Quote:
Board Rules
Announcements: This forum is used by the administrators to announce when people are banned.
This is under discussion in QSF I know, but could I suggest that we stop posting these threads altogether? Filling up the 'Announcements' forum with bans is depressing, gives a skewed impression of the board to visitors, and we don't really need to do this anyway. It's just as easy for an Admin to send a form email to a banned member as it is to post the announcement. And if someone is wondering why a member isn't posting, they can alrady go check the Utility for themselves to see if they're banned. If I were a regular member I wouldn't really care if so-and-so-troll got banned for something or other. Why are we announceing this to everyone? This would also reduce the kind of artificial distinction between "announced" and "unannounced" bans.
Quote:
Board Rules
Web Sites/Design: You can use this forum to announce your new web site and to talk about web site creation. Please note that if you post to advertise your site in another forum, this may be considered spamming, and your thread may be moved to the Web Sites forum and deleted from the forum you originally posted it in.
Can we open up this forum to talk about non-Trek websites too? There seems to be a general consensus among the members that this is something they want.
Ditto for "Trek Gaming." Which, incidentally, should be renamed "The Holodeck."
Quote:
Board Rules
Thank you for registering at the Trek BBS, and have fun!
This sentence should have a smilie following it.
EDIT: Btw, there should also be a section in the rules about the PM function. Questions are coming up about our ability to monitor them.

Folks, this was supposed to be a quick update rather than a big one. All these things are going to have to wait until after January 23rd, when I'm a free woman again.
That's not to say I don't like your suggestions, just that I'm really really really pushed for time at the moment.
Caillan: resisted a differnt title on the old board.
I'm really torn on the whole ban announcments thing. If admins can't actually look up email addresses - I'm assuming from your post about the Jesus guy in the other thread - then your suggestion wouldn't work.
AVs: Mods cant but I can. And that sort of thing WILL be deleted.
No on the web sites thing, since its not actually a forum I want to have more scope to grow. And NO on the gaming things too.
There's something in the FAQ in the side bar about PMs that I added last night.

Please at least keep it in mind. With the downward direction of the franchise, at least in the US, it's a good idea to make sure that the board can attract a broad constituency.

Bit of elaboration now I've had a drink.
On the subject of announcing bans: I pretty much decided we won't do it any more. I made sure the FAQ and the rules include links to the warnings and bans utility. If a person finds themselves banned, they can go check there. If they're not listed there, well, the FAQ covers that too.
Are you all ok with this set up?

Well done, Lisa.
Here is one discrepancy I found in the faq's. This statement is no longer accurate (see the part in bold face):
Quote:
How do I contact a moderator or administrator? If you have a question about the BBS please, post in the Questions, Suggestions & Feedback forum. If you wish to email a moderator, their email address is posted at the top of the forum which they moderate. At the top left of every forum, there is a gold link displaying the name of the forum moderator. Clicking that should open your default email program, with the address filled in on a new blank email.

I have a question about the Private message section:
Quote:
Private Messages are just that - PRIVATE. The admin and mod staff does not have access to your private messages. As a result, they are not moderated in the same manner as posts made on the board. Users are expected to manage the feature themselves, making use of the DELETE function to get rid of offensive content. If a user persistently abuses you via PM, don't read any more of the messages they send you.
Users who abuse the system, including spamming other users and sending offensive content, may find themselves issued a warning and their ability to use the function disabled.
If we don't hve access to, aren't modding and from what I cna tell, you can't forward a PM, how are we going to know if someone is abusing other than just unverifiable complaints?
Just curious. I am a big advocate of the delete function.

Neroon, really buddy. *shakes head*
Lis, coolness. I was just curious about that. Now that the subject has come up though, I want to complain about all these mods sending me threads to look at and actually do some work like stuff. It is really annoying and they just won't quit. Can you warn them or something?

I've looked over the FAQ, and all of it looks pretty good, except for two things that still need to be updated.
We have ten Star Trek movies now, and I think that Christian's name should probably be taken off.
And, on the ranks, I like the set-up. I remember that a long time ago Katie and I both recommended that Vice Admiral start at 8000 posts.

Thanks, Lisa!
Thank you in particular for editing the etiquette, that thing has been annoying the shit out of me for years.
I just noticed a little grammatical error:
Quote:
In addition, she also serve as regular administrator.
"serves" as "a" regular administrator. And "regular" should probably be changed to "super."

For the FAQ - would it be worth having a note to the effect that it takes 15 minutes for the server to update, meaning that it'll take a while before you see the next lounge?
It's a question that seems to be coming up rather frequently.

We shouln't be tailoring the number of warnings we give out in order to ban a person - that's what the changes are here to prevent, basically.

Hawthorne had a suggestion that reminded me of something I'd been thinking about. He wanted us to PM people who get warnings. But with the utility available, and alot of people who don't have PMs turned on anyway I nixed that idea in QSF.
It reminded me though of notifying posters we ban. We no longer publicly announce bans, which is very nice. About a month ago I suggested we PM people who are banned as an alternative, but that wasn't feasible because people don't always have those turned on. And we couldn't email them because Admins couldn't see email addresses.
But now we can. We can access that from their profile. Would it be a good idea to send them a little form letter when we ban them?

Have a Nice Day.
Or something like that.
I don't think it would be too much trouble, we're in their profile banning them anyway. And if somebody doesn't post on the BBS every day anyway they may not notice being banned for a day.
Just a thought.

A notification of a ban is proper. Although I generally don't like "form letters", that might be the better way to go, since it will help us avoid any misinterpretattions (intentional or otherwise).

I edited the form to make it a little more professional. I emailed a copy to Plum after banning him. I blind copied Lisa on it, seemed like a good idea. And I'd suggest that also be part of our regular procedure. Unless anyone has any objections I'd say this is our template.

The only problem is if this is for an extended ban, then they cannot discussit until it is over. Don't get me wrong, most people suffering such an extended stay at the Ban & Bodyworks Resort probably deserve it and no amount of "discussion" will solve that.
But can they still contact the admins via PM during their ban, or are they restricted from that as ell?
