Although there are several variations, the Coat of Arms for the O'Rourke family (and its' variant spellings) consists of a shield, a crown and a sword wielding hand rising out of the crown. The shield is adorned with 2 lions in a passive mode, meant to denote the two kingdoms that the O'Rourkes held sovereignty over, namely Brefni and Conmaicne. The crown represented the fact that the O'Rourkes were of a kingly stature, having been Kings of Connaught and being descent from the ancient line of Brion, a Tara king of the late 4th Century. The sword or dagger represented the valiant nature of the O'Rourkes. Some representations of the Arms included the Ruairc battle cry of "Buagh", which is gaelic for Victorious! |
