Emily's Small Socially Conscience Poetry Anthology
The Faces On Queen Street
I walk down the streets that lack compassion
As everyone flows their own way
they walk over the tired and forgotten
to rush and grab their Café au lait
Why do their stares jab like knives,
as someone asks them for a dime?
People see them as lazy, but do they look deeper
past the cup or the sign
they size them up as useless or old
but do they take the time to say hello?
Are you up there?
Do you see the crimes being committed,
against humanity?
I want to reach out and help them fly
but I feel like a lone owl whose calls are heard
but not acknowledged
How can I change this public display
of indifference that allows people to waste away
I must act out like a bear protecting its young
before it's too late
and their amoral graves are laid

As I look at my picture frame, I think back
Broken windows, a corroding building
What have I gotten myself into?
As I walk like a turtle to
jump into unfamiliar territory
my heart skips as I am welcomed
I give my name and make my purpose known
two are wrap around me overwhelmed with joy
she leads me to the group whom I will be helping
they have attitudes like rock
breed by survival and thought
they have barriers and walls
but I seem to break them down
like the wind does to house of cards
they resolve to having fun
they taught me a thing or two
about taking things for granted
that life deals a raw deal to some
but they embrace and overcome it
As the picture frame reads,
Thanks for a great summer!
